Who were the grubs who camped one K. south of Volkes Hill Junction ( in the unnamed conservation park) on the night of Sat the 26 th of July and in the morning left a great fire blazing at their old camp site. Next day was a howling wind that could have blown ashes into the bush. It is little wonder that we have trouble accessing these areas. Could it have been the desert desserters 08 with the tojo with the large VKS sticker on its side. Shame on you!

Are they part of this group Lindsay or are you searching for them everywhere?

They were seen shortly after, going south towards Cook, about 10 Ks south of the camp.

Whilst I don't think this sort of behaviour really has anything much to do with access to Mamungari (it found it's name about a year ago and if you know what a Mamu is you'd better call it by it's proper name ;-)...

Nonetheless, as someone who cares a lot about GVD, if you'd have collected their details (rego number would be enough) with a few photos you would have allowed NP's to follow up. If they were irresponsible, or possibly irresponsible, they may have had a warning, and if they had been travelling without a parks pass they'd have copped an infringement notice.

VKS may well know who was camping out there on that night and be prepared to have a quiet word in their ear.

Of course on here, you're preaching to the congregation or the silent...

Hi
Guess there are idiots everywhere, we had a similar incident in Flinders ranges some years ago found a massive log fire left going at a time of total fire ban , but it struck us that SA,s did not take any notice of fire bans on the whole trip in SA

Oldtrack,

Where and when did this happen?

The reason I ask is that South Australia's system is a bit peculiar and complex. And total fire bans in the Flinders don't happen often.

We have a "fire danger season" which varies for the region, but for the Flinders it runs from start Nov to middle April each year. During the fire danger season, we have "fire restrictions" (not bans), during which, certain fires (such as cooking and personal comfort) are allowed and do not require a permit. Details are found on the CFS Website.

Then you have council restrictions, national park restrictions, and days of total fire ban apply to some districts and not others. In addition private properties can apply for permits.

I'd be surprised if there was any truth in your statement "SA,s did not take any notice of fire bans on the whole trip in SA".

Hi Phil
it was about 14yrs ago ,time mid maarch, most small fires where @ Aroona hut camp area, they seemed to be all under control & put out on leaving . The big fire was @ a side gorge in the np on rt hand side heading north which had aborig paintingS & engravings can't remember its name or exact location but it had a salty creek @ the end. The whole area was very dry, had had a long dry period according to people @ Hawker
Maybe we did misunderstand the fire warning & I don't remember the exact warning.
If ,I have made a false accusation , I APOLIGISE, & hope the majority follow the rules no matter where they come from.
I have lived in bushy ares most of my llife & to often seen the damage done by the irresponsible with their fires.
But luckly nether have experienced the types of fires VIC & SA seem to have

Hi Phil
Just read the CFS site , maybe the rules have changed since we were there, BUT none of the fires we saw met the requirments for fires during fire danger season.

Gday Oldtrack,
I'm sure you're right, and a few things have changed - I expect that its more regulated now.
The Flinders Ranges National Park have their own fire ban season that these days runs Nov 1- March 1.

Cheers
Phil

HI BORGY
No , we meet some very nice & helpful people on the trip , even some of the ones with fires , it just struck us that they did not know any better ,or that the warnings were generally ignored.
, but all did put them out from what we saw It did suprise us as the country was very dry.
BUT when we came across the big lfire still burning & we stayed the night after dousing it, it was evident that lot had just went off & left it!!

I can see the time coming when all camping in other than designated camping parks will be banned in Australia. There are just so many people who could not care less about what they do or where they do it.

I often wonder what is the reaction of these types is when they come across a situation them selves. But maybe their to b#*_)--=y stupid to see any thing wrong.
