Sub-tank pump on2006 GU Patrol

If any one can help?The sub-tank switch on my 2006 GU Patrol appears to have stopped working.I removed the fuse(it was OK)& put in a new one,just in case.Still not working,if some one can come up with advice I would be grateful,if not a trip to the Nissan dealer at Tweed Heads.I might add the Patrol has been trouble free since new.I now have 80000 Kms.on the clock.

Haven't had the problem myself (touch wood) but I'm led to believe that it is fairly common issue and one that can be expensive to fix. Pop over to this Nissan Patrol Forum and post your question there (do a search first) as you'll get an answer to your problem in no time flat.

A very important item if you are relying on those 30 Litres!
2006/80000KM - It must be still under warranty.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes which should reset the sub tank electronics and see what happens then.

Didn,t disconnect battery,just removed fuse for 20 mins. or so.Vehicle is still under warranty so will ring dealer tomorrow.All replies appreciated.

Pulling the fuse to the transfer pump won’t do it. You need to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU. If it does it again, fit an earth cable from the chassis to the body. This usually solves the problem unless the pumps fried or there’s a bad connector in the loom.

The sub tank pump wont work or the light on the switch wont light up if your main is full, especially if you have a long range main tank fitted.But after 80,000ks I would say you have worked this out, just thought it might be something you overlooked ???

Need some more info please.

1). Are you trying to use the pump whilst the main tank is still showing FULL? As the previous bloke said, it won't operate if the main is full or showing full.

2). Have you been in the habit od leaving the sub-tank empty for long periods? I always make sure I fill the sub tank whenever I fill the main and I always transfer the sub tank over to the main. I work on the theory that you MUST keep fuel in the pump all the time. It tries to pump a small amount every time you hit the starter, so if you don't keep fuel in the tank, the pump has nothing to transfer across.

Forgot to add......it's great that you bus is still under warranty and by all means, make use of it with Nissan.

However, if you are the sort of blike who goes to remote locations, I would respectfully suggest that you spend some time occasionally, underneath the rig. Something like the problem you are having here, would be a good one to have a go at fixing by yourself. If it were mine, I get underneath and see if the pump will work off an independant power source (like a pair of leads off a battery). If it does, then you know the pump is okay and you can then concentrate on what's wrong with the wiring. etc etc.

It's nice to have some idea of how things work when you're out the back of beyond.......

G'day Roachie. I have heard that those pumps are expensive to buy from Nissan too, but there are some half priced options that appear an identical pump. Best to fit a filter in there too when it is done.

What you suggest is the best way to understand what is what under any car, not just a Nissan.

Any news on the return of "The Beast"? Heard from Navigator 1 last night and may catch up with them in Queensland Wednesday.

I had to replace my sub tank pump a few months ago. Nissan thought it was a bad earth. Took it back 3 times, finally a new pump and $660 for the pump and about 7 hours labour to diagnose the problem over three different days at $700.. Lucky its under warranty.. Michael

Sounds like a problem I had some time ago. My sub tank light stayed on (dash) however I couldn't transfer fuel over or turn light off. I took it to Nissan dealer and he showed me a small white module (about the size of a packet of cigs) that sits under the centre console under the radio. He pulled it out and disconnected it for about 20 secs, reconnected and all fixed.

It did happen several times since and I was able to do it myself.
