I have had an occasion where the one bar was coming and going and I had a reasonable connection on my blue toaster.

Steve,
Think RFI make a yagi type aerial for mobile phone use. Would suit your application, as long as you knew where the nearest phone cell was.
With the gain available, am sure you'd get more than one bar!

Bob.

With the Yagi aerial do you need to point it at the nearest tower.? And if so and you didn't know you'd be doing the 360 degree sweep for a while I suppose..?

Yagi's have a narrow arc of ......err, gain(??) so you wouldn't have to point exactly at the tower.
Think it would be a 2 person task, much like the old jokes about hubby & wife tuning the TV aerial.
Just found a photo of one that I'll put on my profile. It is part no. AY15-LA-640-GSM, but not sure if it made by RFI, or not.
hooroo,
Bob.
