Gone Bush (WA)
I bought one of these from Dickies the other day:
Image Could Not Be Found
Acer Aspire One (XC4472 for the white one.)
8.9" screen. 1gb RAM. 120gb HDD. wireless etc.
Just right size for a laptop in the car. Perfect for OziExplorer.
No disc drive but you can get around that with SD cards and thumbdrives.
$698 then you get $99 cashback. That's crazy.
No affiliation etc etc.... just pointing out what I think is a good buy.

Hi there,
these don't look too bad. We trialled one about 6 weeks back. You can buy an external DVD burner to plug into the USB if you want. Not very expensive and
well worth it as a backup system. That way you can use it on any PC with usb ports
Hope it all goes
well.

Hey gone bush,
Haven't quite decided whether I would go the acer or the eeepc? would be very interesting on how yours goes as I have seen it a DSE but not really been able to do too much research on it.
Would be interested to hear your feed back, especially as I need to also use it to transfer pics to external hard drives. Doues it have firewire?
Peter

All
Also a cheaper version of the Apire 1 at The Good Guys at the moment for $399 (512K Ram, 8GB SSHD - looks similar spec to one of the EEEPC range). Will check it out this week

Careful! I think it's got Linux on it. Won't work with OziExplorer. A bargain tho.

Joc
Simple to load XP on it though
Gone Bush - Did Acer supply a drivers disc at all with your package - especially with Windows drivers ?
Cheers

Joc,
no driver disc....
no disc drive to put it in.
It's partitioned on the Hard Drive.

I realise there is no disc drive, but you can attach a USB CD/DVD drive to them easily. With the EEEPC ASUS give you a disc with all the Linux and XP drivers on it so you can rebuild Linux/Xp at any given time and load appropriate drivers form the disc. I have had a quick look on the Acer website, but it was difficult to navigate and I do not know the model numbers for these little machines, so it was hard to identify what drivers Acer are suporting online. Looks like a Ram upgrade in the cheaper Linux version is a bit harder to do than with the EEEPC (partial dis-assemble v's Ram door access), so perhaps the Windows Aspire 1 with 1.5Gb Ram is a better option than the Linux (512k).

These little things sound good Gone Bush.
How is the display , can you read it in
bright non-direct sunlight, I have found most to be poor so far.

Robin,
it's just as bad as any laptop in direct or indirect sunlight.
Sorry to say, things have not improved in that aspect.

Yeah probably Gone Bush , surprisingly I just wandered past one (two actually , one white, one bluish ) , next to a 15 inch screen HP in D Smith and the little unit looked brighter , maybe it was just less total reflected glare.
They look good and its sort of thing I want for
camping , just putting the cars workshop manual on it saves nett weight.

An external disc drive would probably be a good purchase as
well.

Just for people's interest:
if anyone buys one of these or already has a laptop and finds that you can't download web pages while on WIRELESS and on BATTERIES then I have found the setting to select to eliminate this issue.
Just MM me if you need to know.

G'day Bungarra,
Suggest you give some thought to an external DVD drive as
well.
That will be the best and easiest way to load software.
cheers
