I keep looking at the little Asus EEE computer now with windows. I like the tiny size of it and the price. Has anybody here played with one?
Cheers

Haven't used one but am considering one as the 20g version has a solid state hard drive which means it will be ultra tough when driving over all those corrigations. I am still researching.
And the bonus is it still uses xp..... vista still sucks

Hi Peter ,

We were discussing this model last night as there was an advert in the paper selling it for $500 inc cash back . This must have been the hard drive model , but I am interested in the one you mentioned without the hard drive . Will it run OziExplorer as well as a hard drive model ?

At present I use a Fujitsu Tablet with an 8" screen . This works well except on bad corrugations where it has a problem . I would rather use a non hard drive system .

Thanks ,

Willie .

hey Willie

Solid State Drives are storage devices similar to SD cards etc that have no moving parts in them. They can take more shocks and bumps without any issues.

GEnerally access to information on SSD is also a lot quicker than traditional drives.

In off road vehicles they are generally preferred over traditional hard drives which tend to be a bit more delicate and susceptible to shocks and bumps.

YOu can now get SSD that are of reasonable size but because its newer technology, upwards of 32GB SSD's they are quite expensive for what you get at this point in time.

cheers

Solid State based laptops are also much faster than normal mechanicl hard drive models, albeit you are limited to 64GB for the moment until larger solid state drives are available. The Lenovo X300 is the best little laptop on the market however it is expensive. The Asus EEPC 901 Series would be a nice little product. You would also need an external CD burner/reader for loading software or to watch DVD's if you wanted. I think fair it's fair value at around $620.00.

hey mate

i've got a couple of the EEE 901 models - i'm in the process of fashioning a car mount for them for my cars.

I bought the 12GB ones with Windows XP.

Love these little computers - they are perfect for running Trackranger/OziExplorer and for using as a navigational tool and the small size means that they sit in front of the centre consol without being too obtrusive.

I orderd a couple of car chargers from Ebay for them and you can actually run the computers off these chargers as they hv a very small draw.

If you want some more info go to www.eeeuser.com which is a forum dedicated to EEE Pc's and accessories etc.

i'm in the process of modifying the 12GB SSD to something a little bigger like 32GB so that should give me a little more flexibility.

All in all, great computers!

cheers

I really wouldn't be too concerned about upgrading the internals..... you can get pocket hard drives these days quite cheap. Lacie do a 160g for 130 and it is just as tough as a solid state. also they do a 320 and a 500g
That will be the way I would go as I need to move stuff drom computer to computer
