Great Book of the Australian Outdoors
Published by Rigby in 1976. ISBN 07270 01582. Available on the internet.

I found this book(in mint condition), by Jeff Carter, at a book sale recently. It covers the basics of Outdoor Life in Australia and will be a great asset to your library of travel information in addition to all the up to date information obtainable through the ExplorOz website.

Now, 32 years later, some of the practices, as shown in the book, have fallen by the wayside, but basically the book is a comprehensive collection of commonsense information which is still of great value today.

The subjects covered are:

Why When Where and How
Your vehicle
What to take
Trailer and Caravans
Your car and you
Driving in the bush
In case of trouble
Making camp
Camp cooking
Travelling by thumb
Getting along with country people
For the fisherman
For the hunter
Bushwalking and Bush Tucker
For the Outdoor cameraman
For the surfer
Our National Parks
First Aid
Dangerous Wildlife
Dangerous Fellow Travellers
Watching wildlife
What plant is that
Bushfires
Boats and water safety
What about the kids
Where and when
Please send by return mail(where to look for camping gear)

Enjoy!

Cheers

Ah,

Now someone else is nagging you about writing a book.

Good work Wayne, it takes the pressure off me. Willie's been getting a bit cranky with me about my nagging.

I promised never to do it again, but that doesn't mean I won't encourage others to do so.

Jim.

Damn Willem,
Just had a look through the bookcase and came up with a mint condition version of the same book. I'm not sure that I should tell anyone that next to that where the Gregory's Australian Camping Handbook and the Gregory's (Scientific Publications) Four Wheel Drive Handbook.

A little light reading from our early 4WD days.

Thanks for the memories.
Cheers,
Wayne.

Footloose - Foxground is the name of the place where he lived. So you are correct.

My parents were acqaintances of Jeff and his wife - as children we visited their Foxground farm/gallery several times and 'helped' them ride their horses. A really lovely spot part way up the western side of the little valley, occupied by friendly, interesting and highly talented people. Jeff certainly knew his way around a camera.

My rig photo was taken at the Barren Grounds, another beautiful place immediately above the Carter farm.

Gday Willem,
Glad you found a copy. I posted the details a couple of weeks ago on thread 60123! Some classic photos in it.

Mine is no longer in mint condition - I bought it for $6.95 back in 1977 - used it to plan my first 2wd outback trip in the summer of 1978.

Jeff Carter was a legend.
I have another great book of his: "A guide to Central Australia" Sun Books 1972.
ISBN 0 7251 0136 9

But as you can see from the inside cover, he wrote a lot of other books. In the 1980's he wrote a lot for Overlander magazine - had a regular column.

G'day Phil

Ah yes, on search function I remember your comment :-)

My book cost 50c. Thought it would be a good one for the collection though I never read much on 4x4-ing, relying more on the School of Hard Knocks...LOL

That photo of the oil cans being buried is a classic!!!
