Hi everyone. I have recently been told that a large number caravan parks in QLD have banned Thetford chemicals including the Aqua Kem Green which I believed to be safe to use in parks. Has anybody else seen or heard this?

We have been travelling through Queensland for the past 8 - 10 weeks and have never had a problem using dump point anywhere.

I couldn't imagine any park operator opening the bung hole in my porta-pottie to smell what chemicals are being used. Good luck to them if they are that picky LOL

Regards

Neil.

I have heard of a couple of Caravan Park Owners with the old Septic
Tank Systems, encouraging Caravaners not to dump there waste, in
busy seasons, or just after a lot of rain, they havent got Dump Points
and the people dump there Waste directly into the Toillet Pans,
the new Bio Systems have problems also with some Chemical Toilet
Waste, these new products on the market such as Thelford should be ok, the old Thelford Products where Carcinogenic, and being an
old Plumber Drainer I used to Cringe when I used to clear Blockages
at one of the Caravan Parks on the Gold Coast, a few years back.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to use smelly chemicals like Thetford and others when Bio Magic is so much better. It is completely odourless to store and use and it does the job in the cassette superbly.
Check it out

Hi folks,

I have used both the above chemicals and have found that the Bio Magic is not very successful. The Thetford was quite noticably smelly after using the Bio Magic whereas we never had a problem with the Aqua product. I have used Bio Magic strictly as directed and am dissapointed with it.

So much so that I have gone back to a similar product to Aqua from a company called Caost to Coast and it is called Refresh Pink Formula and is lightly perfumed.

They tell me there is another product which is very good and it is called "Odour-B-Gone" and comes in tablet form and I am advised that while it says to use 1 tablet in the top tank and 1 tablet in tha bottom tank you can use half a tablet in each of the 2 tanks.

While I have not as yet tried this product I have purchased it to use in the bottom tank and the Pink stuff I will put in the top flush tank to gain a benefit from the perfume.

Regards,
Gazal

Hi there Gazal, we use the pink stuff as well and have used it from new over the last 3 years. Have never had an issue with smells. And yes the pink stuff I put in the flush tank does have a very nice smell. I have never had it leak when it has been bouncing around in the rear of the car untill I can find a point to empty it. We have used the Odour B Gone tablets and found them not as good as the Liquid Aqua. So we are back to the pink and green but have taken down some "home recipes" from the caravan forum and will give them a try next!

If you have used chemicals, you need to get rid of all trace from top and bottom tanks before BioMagic will do its magic.

There was a thread on the Caravaners Site where a lot of them are now using the Woolworths "Home Brand' Napisan and getting excellent results and very cheap to use.

How would that go with septic systems?

I also am an ex plumber/drainer/gasfitter and have a septic system and so I am concerned re this point.

If it is OK I would definitely give it a try.

Gazal.

We have a 'Bio Cycle' septic system at home and all the 'Nappy San' type products are on the 'do not use' list. I think the same would apply to any septic type system. These products might effectively kill the bad bacteria, but they also kill the good ones which are essential in any septic system.

Like others, we use the Bio Magic product. I would not claim it is perfect, but it is OK and safe in septic systems. So OK at home after a trip and also OK for septic type systems on the road.

Those having residual problems with B-M might be using 'hard' water, which can cause problems in many areas re bathroom/laundry etc,.
I always use/take ''Electric" brand washing soda/water conditioner ($2-3 per 750gms) for all my non-cooking water related needs. When you aren't sure of the quality of the water that you have to have, wherever it is available, a teaspoon of this in the top water tank of the Thetford makes the whole process work better. It also makes the cleaning of the unit, once home, much easier too! I take about a cupful of this powder with us and never use the whole lot. I keep it in a 'spice shaker' and sprinkle a bit in the water for washing up the dishes, general cleaning etc,. Once added to water you can feel the difference straight away and see it in the sparkle of dishes/glasses and cutlery.

I am also a Master Plumber, and Norm C is quite correct with his statement above.

I would also like to know roughly when the Thetford product became carcinogenic free, it can be useful knowledge to the people using there porta potti's infrequently, me included, and may have old stock.

if like us you mainly use your thetford for no.1 than bio magic requires the addition of a tablespoon of plain yogurt or some dirt to start/assist the bacteria production.this was told to us by the manf of bio magic after we complained of the strong uric acid smell . this seemed to fix that peter

We found Bio magic to be anything but,the nappy treatment mentioned is (Home Brand Nappy Treatment Plus) tripple enzyme powerd, biodegradable,SEPTIC SAFE.Said to have a slightly ferfumed effect on the contents when emptying the night soil.

the Home Brand Nappy Treatment Plus triple enzyme stuff is same biocide as Biomagic and 60% stronger and 1/10 of the price.

always been surprised amount of people suckered in giving their cash away for Biomagic when same products available for 1/10 price

Don't know what's in the Bio Magic but the active ingredient in the nappy treatment plus is Sodium Percarbonate 346g/kg the total contents being one kilo, doesn't say what the other 60% contains.
