Can anyone please give me some advise--our 1999 Turbo Diesel Jackaroo (150,000 km)has developed a serious problem with starting. When it starts all is
well but several times now it just will not start and a number of mechanics have been unable to find the fault . This only began a short time after the recall was made.

I have been told by my frirnd at GM, is that the most common reason for hard starts was incorrect engine oil.
The wrong oil does not allow the injectors to crack correctly.
Might be worth a try as it could be a cheap solution

A lot of info on this common problem at Australian 4wdforum then go to the isuzu section, then to this specific engine. From memory they require a 0/40 oil.
Nev from Tas on this site will be able to give correct grade of oil as he had the same problem.
Cheers Pete

Hi wja,
Yep as Madfisher (Pete) says I have been there done that. If you want the full story read 59901. In a cold climate 5w30 is OK. I have started fine every time since my little experience. Obviously the difference between 5w30 and 15w30 is critical in these 3.0l diesels.
By start I assume you mean it will turn over but not fire.

Knew an owner of your model who once told me that engine would turn over until oil pressure was OK before firing. I assumed it was a safety feature to protect the engine.

As some have suggested it may have the wrong oil in it,but i find it hard to believe that HOLDEN have put the wrong oil in it???
Few other things, how old are the glow plugs???
They also have a bad habit of dropping the oil pickup for the injectors.YES they have two one for engine oiling and one for injectors.
Hope this helps.
Matt

I assume it starts eventually.....but when you say it won't start.....how long does it crank for before starting ?
As said above..oil is important....I used to run
mine on Castrol magnetec 10W 40 and never had a problem ( but would take 2 short cranks when the temp was down around freezing )
Have you tried "glowing" it twice to see if that improved it ( may be a pointer to a faulty glow plug )
Is the battery ( being a 99 model it probably has 2 of them ).....strong ? does it crank fast ? They need to crank fast enough to get up oil pressure to operate the injectors ..

Firstly thank you all for the replies re my Jackaroo not starting.
Most talked oil--but I am sure this is not all the problem--also have new glow plugs.
Inclined to think is is a sensor? It certainly appears to be a fuel problem.
It cranks over but does not start,
