My Cruiser's taking a leak

Hello everbody, just a quick question. My 1976 HJ45 cruiser has a slow oil leak (about 4 drips/15-min) between the tailshaft drum brake backing plate and the rear extension housing on the transfer case. I'm assuming it's some kind of oil seal that's cactus?
Any info greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the rear output seal on your transfer case fairly cheap to replace. on the early models the brake drum can put extra weight on the seal area of the output yoke and grove it so you may also need to repair or replace the yoke.

There is an oil seal on the rear of the t/case. It should be a silicone type not ordinary rubber as the brake generates some heat.
Mine leaked and the sealing surface of the drum had worn so I fitted a speedy sleeve onto the seal area of the drum brake. To replace - drain t/case, drop rear shaft - un-stake big nut and undo - remove drum - remove backing plate - lever out the seal and replace.
Also if you don't already know about the cross-feeding of oil between the gearbox and t/case here is another handy hint. These old cruisers have a seal between the t/case and gearbox which fails. When that happens the oil will 'pump' forwards from the t/case into the gearbox. A quick fix is to get a hose company such as Pirtek to make up a hose that screws into g/box filler plug and t/case filler plug. That way when the g/box over fills it simply drains back into t/case.
Mine worked that way for years.

Yeah, thanks for that Mike. When I bought the Cruiser, the owner told me about the cross-feeding of oil that you mentioned. It's a real PITA to 'rotate' the oil every month so, yes, I'm thinking of that drain-back system. Actually, in my case, it's the gearbox that leaks into the transfer case, not the other way around. So it's the transfer that requires regular draining, then topping up the gearbox with the same oil.
