Hi,

First post and all so be gentle please!

We are after a cabin style canvas tent. We've looked at the 12 x 15 oztrail tent and it suits our needs very well.

Before buying though I want to know what other brands sell similar products. The only ones I've seen are diamantina....these are more exy, does this mean they are better or would we just be paying for a brand name?

Any others I should consider?

Can't help with the other brands, however we have an oztrail tourer and have been happy with it's quality.
Just do the usual wet down to expand the needle holes and you should have a good tent.

Cackles.

missy, do a search and you will get a 50/50 good / bad report on them I've had 2 of them the first one failed due to ripping from windy conditions but it didn't leak and the other just won't stop leaking after doing everything I could.
So me thinks there is a 50/50 chance you might like it.
Pay the extra and get something that will last for a long time

That reminds me of a time long ago, when we would go camping at least every second weekend, with the kids, we purchased a tent
from K-MART, in those days it cost about $180-00, with a 2 year
warranty, never had any problems with that brand, but we would
take it back to where we bought it about every 18 months, and get
it replaced under warranty, we would just tell them that it leaked or
some thing, and we had new tents for about 7 years, the brand name was Jackaroo, and we still use it when we can't take the van
into hard to get to areas. gees i'm a bad man lol.

Cheers

What are other brands are you talking about when you say "pay the extra and get something that will last for a long time"?

Kenny their was a faulty batch of oztrail touring tents. They made the holes to big for the stitching. Mine was replaced free of charge. Leaked arround the centre pole support.

Hi Missy

We have had a cabin canvas tent for the past 12 years, and still going strong. ( we are using the camper, but when the kids come we still use it.) it was not the most expensive one at the time, never leaked, but as a big canvas cabin tent, it is not the quickest to set up and or pack up.
As long as you can get a good canvas on it you should be ok, and yes wet it well before you first trip.

Cheers and good luck.

I have an oxtrail tourer and its now getting on to 2 years old and has survived high winds and dust storms in birdsville, chilly nights in the flinders range and has been great.

I have not seasoned it as your meant to but I figured the first night I had it up it was soaked by dew which took a couple of hours to dry before I could pack it up and move on.

I have not been in heavy rain only a few showers and no leaks.

Its easy to put up and pull down by one person. I cannot comment on other tents just the one I have.

I'm happy with my oztrail. In the end you have to be happy you made the right choice.

Brian

We've had an Oztrail Tourer 9 Plus (with extended back) for 5 years. It's been used a reasonable amount with family of 4 bit now our kids are 16 & 13 and it's a bit small. Never leaked or had any problems with it. Quick set up and pack away. it's been used on numerous school camps where I expect it has copped a bit of a beating around the door area.

A mate bought a Tourer 9 (standard size) and has travelled Australia extensively with it (and a Waeco fridge in a Ford Focus). Never had any problems with his either.

I always make sure we have a little waterproofing solution on hand for when we see a needle hole or a blemish in the canvas.

Forgot to say, its the best item of camping gear we have bought for under $400. We always use a piece of heavy duty shade cloth underneath to keep the floor clean and it seems to stop the buildup of condensation. IMO, they are a good tent.

Australian Canvas Company - Bayswater, Victoria - makes excellent tents. Ours is 14 years old, we had it made in their best heavy duty canvas. It has been used extensively over that time, and in some tough conditions. Was not cheap, but has been worth it for the reliability, ease of putting up (compared to some of the cheap Asian made ones that have many poles of differing lengths). Has been in some pretty ferocious rain and not leaked. The way it is going, reckon we will get another 20 years or so out of it!
