I'm considering a 100 series landcruiser to tow a 2.6 ton boat & the occasional off road trek & beach run.
What is the best package, IE, diesel, petrol, auto or manual?
I probably prefer a manual as have no experience with Auto's off road.......but will be guided by you guys as you have the experince.
Where do I start?
Thanks,
Pjb

I have a 1.5t boat I tow up
the beach. I use to have a 1HZ 80 series manual that used to struggle and have upgraded to a V8 petrol auto 100 series. I would never look back. Put Polyairs in the rear and it is an awesome towing vehicle with plenty of grunt and better fuel economy than expected. I have offroaded in manuals all my life, but with the auto now (especially for
the beach) i dont reckon I would go back to manual (get the 5 speed auto if you choose this route - mid 2003 onwards I think).
I am sure plenty on here will also sing the praises of the turbo diesel
Cheers

i have a 100 series T/D 5 speed auto, off road it is brilliant.it has a very low - low first, crawls down steep hills slowly with no brakes,i have had manual and auto 4WDs before but no comparison to the 5 speed t/d.if you plan to keep it buy a diesel but if no plan for long term buy the V8 as they are good also. I think you have a lot to learn about off road driving.
Why don't you think a auto diesel is no good off road?

If its low range your worried about I know for the patrol autos a switch can be installed to keep the converter locked, handy for steep low range hills, maybe something is similar on the toyota.
As for the auto manual debate i reckon you cant beat an auto especially if your towing on
the beach.

Is anyone can explain me that myth about “auto unbeatable on the sand” that going around endlessly? It does not bother me at all what people like to drive, everyone has own choice, but I just cannot understand why people continuously rubbish manuals. I just crossed Simpson on my manual turbodiesel and I am telling you – I will not look at auto for driving desert under any circumstances. Yes, manual does require some interference, but it is not that obtrusive and I am fully in charge! Plus this is most of fun of 4WDing – to choose right gear (in wide meaning as
well) for given situation - if you just about getting from point A to point B then why do not buy a ticket on plane? I would understand when someone says that auto is OK in sand in opposite to mountains where auto not good at all, but saying that it is superior to manual means admitting that your driving skills not that good.

Hi PJB,
You don't mention whether or not your a city dweller. The reason I say this is because I find when I go to Brissy My Manual TD 80 is an absolute pig of a thing to drive in the city. Through the inner city, the starting off from traffic lights, 1st, 2nd 3rd gear stuff kills her. Fuel economy is ridiculous. Don't be put off by having an auto, their heaps better to what they use to be like years ago.
Just a thought.

Serg i dont recall anyone going on endlessly about autos on sand, i just prefer autos, ive had manual 4bys and autos and will always have an auto now, less effort to drive. As mentioned they are pretty
well sorted these days.
Dont recall mentioning superior either, looks like you get ur nose outta joint pretty easy, i wont start with nissan or toyota!
Cheers, Wayne
