Anyone know what map the old track between Constance Hedland and Eagle Hwy is shown on. I know i have seen it before but maybe it was only a mudmap in a 4WD book (old version of Ronele Gard?)

I know it is a very old track but i just want to know the route of the original track

There is a track from Calvert Ranges via Constance Headland up to Birrill Rockhole and slightly beyond but after that it disappears. All who have made that trek over the past few years have been driving cross country.

In 2006 I came across some very old tracks out there but only for a sort distance. Found some fresh tracks as far as Mt Madley but for the rest made our own way across the spinifex on a bearing.

I did this track last Month. I just used the Hema desert maps and the 250k topo map on my laptop with Ozi Explorer. We just followed existing tracks east from the Calvert Ranges. Two vehicles towing trailers with quad bike had come through from east to west about 2 weeks before us. They looked like they had trouble finding the track in places and made there own. Going from west to east is alot easier. We were following tyre tracks may by Phil Bianchi(on this site) back in May this year. If you have Ozi Explorer I can email you our Track plot.

Hi Glen. Would appreciate it if you can email me your route (thorntonz@optusnet.com.au).
Also:
- How many driving days did it take you from Constance to Eagle Hwy
- Any highlights to see enroute? .. ie are Constance Hedland, Birrill rockhole, Mt Madley etc interesting? (i've been to the Calverts so not expecting anything like that of course)

Glen

Did you find an actual used track from a while ago after leaving Birrill Rock Hole?

I turned left when I reached the Birrill Track(east to west) and followed it for about 4km but it then disappeared into the spinifex. Flattened grass ahead from there indicated that it was probably made by the Geralton Historic Society whi had passed through a couple of weeks before us heading west to east.

Drew

Not sure what you mean by interesting? Its pretty flat country with numerous sandridges and lots of spinifex to negotiate. Trying to find the various Rockholes as indicated on the maps is something else. It was extremely dry when we passed through there. Mt Madley is the only feature after Birrill Rockhole. The Warri Site has an old shed and a broken down windmill.

I staked GQ and trailer tyres 8 times along that route. Hidden burnt Mulga stumps were the main cause. I see you are driving a Prado. You will have to make sure you clean out the spinifex grass from the chassis on a very regular basis as Prado's have caught fire out there especiall with the build up of grass towards the rear of the vehicle.

Hi Willem,
The track we followed from Birrill Rock hole just keeped going ESE following the sand junes. There were some fresh tracks coming into Birrill Rock hole from the NNE that were from Mick O a couple of weeks before us.
From Birrill Rock hole we never saw Micks tracks until to just after Mt Madley, from Birrill to Mt Madley we were following Phil Bianchi tyre tracks from May this year. The track was faint in places but hoping out of the car and having a look around you could just see where the went.

And I can give you plot for Trackranger and Garmin but as Glen said above, we came from east to west and the tracks are a bit all over the place. We ended up making our own for most of the way.

Cheers.

Constance headland has some pretty good art, some are better than Calverts. You will have to look hard!
The most fantastic cave is there but it is nearly impossible to see and you need to explore to find it. Plenty of petroglyphs(carvings??) on the rocks

Hi Rob

I am interested in seeing some of those petroglyphs you mention.
Might have to do another trip out there now that I know the way.

Please contact me via email willem@kempen.id.au so I can get some details from you if you care to share them.
