Has anyone changed out a 4 speed auto for 5 speed in a 100 series. I have a 1999 4.5lL petrol , will a later model Landcruiser (03 onwards I think) 5 speed bolt up to my pride and joy!
Does anyone know of another make/model 5 speed that would fit the bill.
Also, can someone point me in the right direction in regards to installing a Nissan front live axel so I can get rid of the feeble hilux diff before I break it in the middle of nowhere!
cheers,
Evan

According to an article in 4x4 Action a few months ago the diff is definitely not a Hilux one.
The problem is with how the teeth are cut and what happens when you load them up in reverse.
Cant help you with the auto. Might be cheaper to buy a new vehicle than do an axle change

Further investigation:- The diff article is in issue 94 of 4wd Action and the Front axle conversion is in issue 113 on page 107

thanks Graham, I will go back through my issues and check it out. Couldn't remember for the life of me where I had read about it!
I have so many books and mags I could start a library. But it's my pile and I luv it. Needless to say the missus is off the piles and piles of reading material in the study!
cheers

Hi Ev, you have a 105, not a 100 Series. The 100 Series is a very different beast and has the torsion bar independant front end which has been the type with the majority of problems.
The 105 is essentially an 80 Series arrangement with a front and rear, coil sprung, live axles. The diffs can break but as rule this is due to running 35's and operator abuse.
Nearly all minesites and the vast majority of hire companies run 105's without too many diff related issues. Check out LCOOL for more info.
As for the 5 speed, they came into play with the 100 Series and as such are designed specifically for the V8. Even if you could get one to fit mechanically, you'd have a world of pain to get the elctonics hooked up. It's not like the old days of simply bolting a T400 T700 Chev box up to a Holden. It would be cheaper to buy a new vehicle.
Cheers
