Hi everyone,
My bus is running extremely rough, for 5-10 mins . When started for the first time. No matter what time of the day. Blows a heap of white smoke out the exhaust aswell. After 5-10 mins she runs like a trooper, for the rest of the day.
I've tried glowing it a couple of times beforhand, replaced the glow plugs, did the injectors 8000 km ago and did the fuel and air filters.
If there's anybody out there who's had simular problems or has any handy hints to help me out. I'd appreciate it greatly.
Cheers Greg

I'm not an expert here, but I would believe that it's either your glow plugs , again, or maybe try replacing the relay, for the plugs..
I have a similar type problem with my Patrol, and it's gunna be the relay, I replace first, if I ever get around to it....
Bit embarrassing ain't it...the guy's at work give it to me, at knock off time...
One thing I have tried is to give the truck 2 or 3 hits on the key, waiting for the glow plug light to go out each time.
Cheers
Bucky

Get a mulimeter and
check that voltage is actually getting to the glow plugs when you glow it. (should go about 5 secs or so) If there is no voltage when someone turns the key to glow it for you then you relay?timer nedds to be looked at.
If voltage is present when glowed then loosen the nuts on the glow plugs and slide out the connecting bars so all glow plugs are now independent of each other then set the multimeter to the 200 ohm setting and put one prong on the centre threaded part of the plug and scratch the other on to the side body of it. the reading on the multimeter should go from 1 to pretty damn close to 0.00
If any of these after checking and rechecking(in case you had bad contact with your probes) dont go to 0.00 then that plug has died.
glow plugs are like any electrical item sometimes they dont last long for no reason, I only ever replace one at a time and I dont do that very often only replaced one in last 2 years in my 1HZ got it a few months ago for around $17 from Bursons

Greg,
I would
check compression, particularly considering you have white smoke. IMO glow plugs have nothing to do in 1HZ – at some stage I have completely disconnected
mine without any ill effect, just one more crank. They truly needed in sub-zero temperature to help start, but has very little to do to roughness of cold engine. High-pressure pump is another possibility. You can hold each injector line to feel “knocking”. They should feel very much the same and be sharp. It gets some practice to feel them properly. If you notice that particular one feel “soft”, then exchange injector with “sharpest” one and repeat observation next morning. If “soft” one migrate with injector, that it is definitely injector, otherwise seems like fuel pump. If all knocks fairly equivalent, that it most likely compression or valve/injection timing.
Good luck
Serg
