Hi all,

Just purchased an 87 L300 after a great deal of hunting around. In great nick and drives like a dream. The other day after parking suddenly there is no reverse gear or 5th, with no warning at all. I had a look at the unfamiliar linkages and all gears seem to select so I dropped the tray off the box (5 speed) expecting the worst.

There was very little metal in the oil and the inside of the box looked fine to my untrained eye.

There are 2 selectors run by cables from the gearshift, does it sound like a simple adjustment problem or do I need to look further? I also unhooked the linkages and tried to manually get the gears but still no joy.

It drives fine, no noises just no 5th or reverse! can even put it into reverse or 5th while driving and it acts just like as in neutral.

Cheers
Deano

Found it...

Nut on the rear of the gearbox holds the shaft that controls 5th and reverse.

Fairly common to come loose after heavy load in reverse such as pullingh someone out of a bog.

Just got to pull it down now to fix.... :(

Hi Deano,

Mitsubishi's had a gearbox problem with the 5th gear retaining nut up until about 1988 when they fixed it. Normally gearboxes would last around 80,000 to 150,00km and then the plastic fastener that held the retaining 5th gear nut disintegrated and then the nut would wind loose and drop off and stuffing the gearbox totally. This normally happened at speed. You have been very lucky not to have this happen to you. I would pull the box down and have a good look at it. Contact Mitsubishi to ask what the procedure is to remedy this.

Cheers, Willem

Thanks Willem. I will certainly take your advice and give the box a good going over. That will be this weekend taken care of! :)

deano.
The recomended fix for the large nut that comes loose is to grind a second slot in the mian shaft opposite the factory one and then double stake the new nut. There is no plastic retianer just the stake. Eric.
