Hi,
I have a budget of just under 10K for a used 4wd. I am interested in the Terrano II 2.7 turbo diesel.
Could some Terrano owers/mechanics comment on the lifetime of this turbo diesel engine, do they happily clock more than 200K without major problems?
As this is an older car (97-99) most have around 150K+ on the clock, there are a few to be had with as low as 100K but they tend to be upwards of $12/$13.
I know in general that diesel have a higher lifetime than petrol engines but I would welcome comments on buying a Terrano with 125K vs 150K vs 190K etc.
Also what major
services should have been done on this engine if I am reviewing log books or service histories?
Are there any common problems or rust areas which I could look out for when viewing/driving used Terranos I may be looking to buy?
Thanks Ben

Well my opinion may not be worth much as I have never owned one, however my first vehicle was the Terrano II petrol and what a heap of cr@p. Nothing inherently wrong with it just utterly gutless, it's impossible to believe it had similar power specs to my lux which would leave it for dead.
That said, I would have bought the diesel if i could have afforded it and would probably still have it.
The parts are (or were then, so you should check by ringing a dealer) supported by Nissan, they were the biggest selling 4WD in Europe when they were out and my bro in the army was driving them in Kosovo.
You'll never need a
snorkel as the air intake is halfway up the driver's side roof pillar, and they have great reputations. There was once a website of some backpackers that bought one
Perth and brought it up through the middle, went through mud roads and swollen rivers surprisingly without getting them killed. Fuel consumption about 10l/100km and you could get that down again by staying under 100km/hr (aerodynamics thing).
Will be worth searching google and the forums though for more advice from actual current owners.
Only downside is there were never that many sold in oz so second hand parts could be a trial to find.]
I guess most here will say get an older cruiser or an older patrol and you may have better luck keeping it on the road for the long term if only that mechanics are familiar with them and parts are everywhere.

It would be worthwhile asking on the pathfinder forums (google pcoa) as there are some terrano owners in there.

I have a Terrano II 2.7TDI diesel.
It currently has done 395,000 kms, we got back last night from a 4000km Outback trip which included
Innamincka etc & to be quite honest I would go again tomorrow.
We tow a Track Eagle camper trailer all through the High Country as
well as the Outback & have ample power.
I would be more than happy to discuss it with you at anytime.

Have you had to do any major work on the engine eg. recondition the turbo or replace fuel pump etc?

Nothing!
The only relatively big job that I have done, is to replace the front disc rotors.

Not trying to deter you from the terrano Ben, but their is now a large range of 4wds priced arround $10000.00.Eg 97/98 nl Pajs, 98 to 2000 v6 Jacks many with 100000ks. People often ask $12000 or more but in the currant buyers market you should pick up an excellent vehicle fot this money.
This morning when to look at a 91 nh Paj for my son and got a pleasant surprice, excellent service history, neat and tidy, low ks for age and drove very
well. Few scratches and small dents but for arround $5000.00 a bargain.
Goodluck with whatever you choose
Cheers Pete

Just met a guy in
Cooktown with one - Deisel. Had it since new.
He tackled the Cape and the track, even Nolans Brook with no
snorkel. Reading the coments above I see the intake is mounted quite high.
He commented on how great the car was for him. He also towed a small on his travells.
Cheers

The air intake is under the bonnet through the inner guard, not really very high.
