We are off to Fraser Island in 4 weeks and hoping to camp at Sandy Cape. I have read the Fraser conditions report (14/08) and the Oz site road conditions (Nov 07) but would like to know if anyone has recently travelled in that area.

there was a subsidance at Ngkala bypass a few weeks ago, it caused a 100 series to roll onto the rocks, thankfully noone ws seriously hurt.

I have been out bush, so don't know what EPA have done about the bypass track, it would be worth ringing EPA Orchid Beach and asking directly, or even the Orchid Beach General Store.

As for conditions, Fraser Conditions can change drasticly after a shower of rain, the only usefull local knowledge is what you get when you are there...

I was up that way in late June. The sand behind Ngkala Rocks was very soft, and there was a huge hole at the southern approach to the rocks. There is also another jump-up towards the end of the track, heading north. People were making it through ok - just need to be careful.

It's worth the trip to Sandy Cape but watch the tide times closely. I've never camped that far up - limited water and a long way from many of the interesting spots on the island.
