After fitting a spare wheel carrier, i want to fit a wheel lock nut to the spare wheel and the other 4 while i'm at it. After checking the usual repco, auto1, autobarn, tyrepower, ARB 4WD
shop etc i couldn't find a lock nut to suit! The problem is the mag wheel metric lock nuts have a shank which is too long to suit the 80 series factory mag wheel.
I guess i could buy a set and cut them down and paint the cut end to stop rust, or add probably 3 washers, but i'd prefer to find a proper fitting lock nut!
Has anyone found a locknut which fits properly?
Also while checking my wheel stud size, i noticed one center cap was a bit cracked and didnt fit too securely. Sure enough on the drive home it let go so i'm one short.
Does anyone know a wrecker who sells landcruiser parts in NSW ans i've tried a random few who dont, and Toyota want $85 per cap which i could spend better elsewhere on her!
Thanks!

Just searched the yellow pages under Auto parts recyclers and found no names under "yellow".
Thanks anyway.

Ha ha, i thought you were recommending a wrecker as i had called a few up in yellow pages with no luck.
Googled "4x4 wreckers NSW" and got a few specialist 4x4 wreckers, all who said 80 series factory alloy center caps are as rare as hen's teeth and couldn't help.... bugger.
Might spend the morning back-tracking my steps to try to find the old one...
As for locknuts, i don't think i'll worry about them on the road
wheels, but will buy a good one for the spare wheel on the back. The one i'll prob get has a tapered
seat nut which will be ok since it's seating on the kaymar number plate bracket, and it has a chrome sleeve which locks over it and spins freely so you cant undo it. It uses a key to release so it looks neat. Like i've seen on some new 4WDs as a factory accessory.
Cheers.

Tippa,
I only use a locknut on the spares & use a thick washer as a spacer. The locknuts require a matching socket to remove them.
Beware of key locks in general as the locks have a tendency to fill with dust & mud. Plastic insulation tape over the key entry is a solution or, as I do, fit the standard wheel nuts back on when on a trip.
As for the centre caps- good luck finding them at a wrecker. Took me 8 years of on / off searching to pick up 2 spare
wheels - came with the caps & mag wheel nuts too!
Cheers, Tony.

Tony, great minds think alike ha ha.
I decided not to fit lock nuts to the road
wheels, and i fitted normal wheel lock nuts to the spare on the back using normal wheel nut washers as spacers for the numberplate bracket.
I ended up using normal locknuts which have a thinner shank than original Toyota ones, but torqued up, she is nice and sturdy as a spare. Wouldnt do it on the road
wheels though!
I couldn't believe that Toyota mag wheel stud holes are actually a slightly larger diameter than every other car out there.... so you have to buy genuine wheel nuts as NOTHING else fits, and you can't even buy wheel nut washers to suit the original nuts as their shank is a larger diameter than normal and there is no washer available to fit! I even tried a few nut/bolt specialists and they said i'll have to modify oversized ones.... and i couldnt even buy genuine Toyota washers as they are suaged onto
the nut!
So what i learned was you can't get locknuts, or washers, to suit 80series factory mags, Toyota stitched that market up, and Toyota doesn't even sell them. At least you can use the normal slimmer shanked mag wheel locknuts on the back spare, with the number plate bracket spaced out with a normal wheel stud washer. Good stuff.

I just spoke to my father-in-law who i bought the cruiser from, and he has another spare factory mag for me. So i have two spares, but am still short one center cap ha ha. He lost 2 center caps a while back and had to buy new ones from Toyota at a painful $80 each. I think i may have to do the same....
