Hi,

My landcruiser 1HZ's power steering seems to fail at idle revs, if i'm going real slow and put the clutch down i loose my power steering (but am building good arm muscles). Is this likely to be the pump giving out or simply not enough revs to power it? Is it a common problem? unfortunately i don't have a tacho so it's gonna have to go to a mechanics to check that out.

Ta! Sean

It was serviced 2500k's ago and just checked, oil and PS fluid are full, wish it was that simple!

If your oil levels are OK then it is most probably the pump.

hi check that the harmonic ballancer nut is tight as the pump as i understand it is driven off the crank and is not key'd to it on some engines.

Change the fluid first, sometimes amazing what affect it has.
If they changed the fluid at the last service (unlikely) then it may have a bit of air in the system and need 'bleeding'
This is done by jacking both front wheels off the ground on stands and going from lock to lock a dozen or so times with the engine off and then the same again with the engine on. Check fluid levels during this exercise.

Flushing with new fluid is always a good idea, and fixes most noisy power steering probs, but i doubt it has anything to do with one not having enough pressure at idle.
As for bleeding, lock to lock turning on the ground is usually good enough. If you have been driving then i'd be confident there is no air in the system.
What i'd do is have a look at the condition of your oil. If its red with no metal particles in it then i wouldnt worry about flushing it. Then i'd go and get someone with a timing light to check the revs at idle.
My thoughts are if its not noisy then your revs are just too low for it to build up enough pressure.
Being a diesel (from my understanding) as your diesel pump wears out your revs at idle gradually drop??

If its making a hydraulic groan or squeal ,the stator made be "varnished"
Some of the PS pump reconditioning fluids work well,I dont normally recommend additives but I was advised by an expert.
Wynns or Lucas

The other likely problems hve all been mentioned such as loose belt and low idle speed.
New pumps on ebey are $44o last time I looked.

I had mine rebuilt a few back and still ok after 30000klm.
The vanes on the rotor were ok but an oring has worn a sllight groove in the shaft and needed a polish on a lathe
