Hi All,
Never caravanned before, hiring a Jayco Discovery from
Newcastle for two weeks (testing the waters) and looping down the coast, probably as far as Warrnambool, and back inland.
Questions: We will probably stop at Pambula; what are some good spots after that? We are not great walkers - peace and quiet/ambience and good facilities are more our go. Do you skip the Wonthaggi area? Seem to recall it's known for coal.
Thanks in advance, any suggestions appreciated. Went to NRMA today for Caravan Guide - not available until end of Sept. Looked at the only guide in local Borders and it was pathetic.
Regards, John.

John,
Where do I start?
Around Pambula is
Tathra. It has a wharf/jetty that drops straight into deep
water and the fishing is good.
Do not skip the Wonthaggi area. Inverloch is beautiful and the
park (I think it's a Big 4) on
the beach is lovely. The RACV has also recently built a resort
park there recently. Avoid Moller's
Park, it's 95% permanent vans and pretty austere.
Venus Bay in the same general area is a tiny little place on
the beach. Can't comment on the
Park there. Good beach fishing and you can gather your own Pippies (known as cockels in some odd parts of Australia LOL) on
the beach.
The Phillip Island Caravan
Park, at Newhaven, Phillip Is, is also very good. Nice quiet spot located right on
the beach.
Nicholson has a
Park located right next to the River, but I've never stayed there.
Just a little to get you started.
Cheers,
Jim.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the detailed info. Will give Inverloch a try, it's a good distance for our limited schedule.

Is my question not worthy of an answer.
I was thinking of shouting our friends who have fallen on hard times a trip for a few weeks with us if the cost wasn't too pricy.

Hi Didiaust,
Cost is $500 per week, $550 for ensuite model. Nielsens at Heatherbrae. Vans look new. Mileage? Where is the odometer on a van? I'm new to this...

Thanks John
I saw you answered other posts and thought my question may have offended you. Too impatient and I understand I'm not that quick on the keyboard either.
I hope in the months to come i can be of assistance to you. I'm a fellow Novocastrian and have camped and caravaned mainly in NSW for 40 years.

No worries, I'm hard to offend. SWMBO maybe another matter. Thanks for the offer. We'll report on the van when we return around 21st Sept. The hire company provide mirrors and levellers included in that price.
Regards, John.

Around
Apollo Bay there is a foreshore
camping area called
Skenes Creek (right on
the beach) - basic facilities but the location is great; also
Wye River is also a nice spot. Around
Lorne is Cumberland Reserve - another beautiful spot.

I'll throw in a oddball one... Seabank Caravan
park near
Port Albert. What makes it worth consideration is they have/supply fire drums and wood. BYO marshmellows :)

Thanks Nige. I'm away from home/maps etc at the moment but appreciate the info.
Very good of everyone to take the time to share their experience, it will make our first van experience less stressful choosing camps.

John,
In addition to the great responses, I would suggest that you join a couple of major chains eg Big4, Top Tourist, Family Parks etc for a small fee, and enjoy some good quality parks at discount rates. You will recoup most of your joining fees after 2 weeks on the road.
All of these chains have detailed web sites.
I have no affiliation with any, except as a member.
