Hello all,
Will be heading out to the "Corner Country" soon and am after some feedback regarding the hiring of a SAT PHONE. Info I am after is "where to hire from" and also if it needs to be returned to that premises or can it be returned to the same company in a different state? Also what is the cost of calls? any info would be appreciated.
Regards: Phil

Phil,
I have just hired a Satellite Phone from Landwide Satellite Solutions, should be here next week for my trip along the Gunbarrel,Tanami and Gibb River Road. Go to the Google Search engine and bring them up, the only reason I am using them was they were the only Satellite Phone hire business who answered my query.

Regards
Mark

pf11,

Where exactly are you planning to go in Corner Country?

The reason I ask is that I doubt you would need a Sat Phone in that part of the world, unless you have a pressing need to keep regular contact with home or work.

You would get reasonable coverage on most of the roads in NSW with a Next G phone.

If you had an emergency you would most likely be able to contact help with a good UHF. Just scan all 40 channels and you will pick up the local stations. I wouldn't be pestering them but if you genuinely need help they will be more than willing.

That is a pretty well populated part of the country and there are plenty of people moving about in all but the hottest times of the year. Unless you are planning something really unusual you won't be on your own for long.

If you are using it for emergency contact would a Flying Doctor Radio be just as good? If so Muscat's Auto Repairs on the corner of Bromide and Cobalt St Broken Hill has them for hire at reasonable rates. If your trip takes you through the Hill he might save you a quid. His number is 08 8088 1242.

A post on another forum I read said this guy had done a trip to the Corner Country in April this year with a Telstra prepaid Next G phone with an aerial on the bullbar and patch lead and he got reception almost everywhere.
Maybe that's an option.

Unfortunately people's interpretation of "almost everywhere" can vary dramatically.

Once you are in SA or QLD, there is NO coverage for hundreds of kilometres from Cameron Corner.

Coverage stops about 10km out of Tibooburra or Mt Sturt.

Have a look at actual NextG coverage before hoping you will have coverage where your life may depend on it.
