Hey all,
Heading to Fraser for the first time in september for 5 days. I know you could spend 3 weeks on the island and not see everything so I'm after some suggestions of things that are a must see. Also any tips on whether to
camp up the northern end of the island for a couple of nights and then further south for a couple of nights or whether I'd be better off
camping in one central spot for the whole five days.
I know its kind of a 'how long's a piece of string' type question but any suggestions would be appreciated
cheers
Dylan

Prop in one spot for a few days then move.
You are constrained a lot by the tides and the state of the beaches.
Moving will allow a better coverage. There is plenty of
camping spots along
the beach. Enjoy the trip its a beautiful place.

Lucky man....!
we always stay in one spot and do day trips from there. Depending on how much stuff you have and how quickly you pack up and setup again.
I don't like setting up and packing up
camp and prefer to just drive a little extra. Check your tides and conditions and have a great time

Hi Dylan,
we have camped in different
places on Fraser on various trips,
Lake Boomanjin is a nice spot although the
camp ground is inside a
dingo fence. If you're tenting, that's only a mild annoyance. the lake itself is tannin coloured, it is ok to swim in there, the tannin clour is stain from the paperbark trees that surround the lake. On the eastern beach there are
camp area's everywhere if you're
bush camping, otherwise Dundubarra or Cathedral Beach are nice spots. The lakes are "must see's"... Lakes Boomanjin, Birrabeen, McKenzie, Garawongera, Allom, Wabby and Ocena Lake are
well worth the effort in getting to. And a day trip over to Wathumba
Creek is a great idea too!
If you
camp on the eatern beach, between, say, Poyungan Rocks and Dundabarra, you could "day trip" to any of these
places, depending on tides etc......
I use the tide calculator at
Brownies Coastwatch (go to the fishing menu and selct Qld Tides, theres a
Waddy Point (Fraser Island) option. Drive 2 hours either side of low tide, have your tyre pressures right and you'll have a ball!!
Cheers
Brian

My 2 fav
places were the Poyungan Valley drive and the walk around the '
turtle lake'. Oh, & if you're into looking at bikini clad tourists you can't go past Lake McKenzie. Be sure to get there early to get a good spot!
We drove up to
Waddy Point & beyond and honestly I didn't think much of it.
Otherwise, awesome place.

do a day trip that takes in lakes makensie and birrabean aswell as
central station, you won't be disappointed. make sure you go to
lake allom for the turtles, climb to top of
indian head for the view and whale watching,
park on the northern side of the headland and walk up.
sandy cape is worth the drive, but on a 5 day trip you may struggle to get tides right, and see all the other stuff aswell as find time to relax. wathumba which is accessed via
orchid beach and the about a 45 minute drive from there is
well worth the drive and a very nice spot for lunch aswell.
elie
creek isn't what it used to be about 5 years ago,
champagne pools are ok but also wouldn't say are a must do. if you do the first drive i said aswell as
lake allom and
indian head you'll definately enjoy the place.
