Evening everyone, Looking in to fitting a turbo to my 1hz, is there anything to be gained by choosing a Denco over a DTS or vice versa, any good or bad points regarding why not to buy one or the other.
Regards Krakka

Carnt comment on the Denco turbo but I put a DTS turbo on my old 4 Runner and have just purchased a S/H DTS kit that Im soon putting on our Cruiser(1HZ).I have just had it totally o/hauled at a cost of $600.Carnt wait to get it on.
Are you putting a Intercooler on as
well.Highly recommended on a 1HZ.Anything to keep the temps down. Also fit an EGT gauge and drive the vehicle of it.

Hi Nick, not bothering with intercooler, keeping an eye on EGT guage will be taking care of temp issues.

Should add, we have a 2 1/2 inch high flow mandrel bent exhaust system fitted and we are up grading our clutch to a H/D one.Injectors and pump were o/hauled 15000kms ago and valves have just been done.Id do all of this before fitting any turbo.

i've got a DTS turbo and intercooler on my 1HZ, one thing i would do is put a 3" mandrell bent exhaust system on. fitted the turbo first with just standard exhaust for a week before i got the 3"system fitted, was pretty disappointed with the power gain running a standard exhaust. once the 3" system was fitted it was a different vehicle to drive.

Anyone recommend a good place to buy 3" mandrel exhausts in WA (around
Perth or SW). I was thinking MTQ? It's for a 79 seroes turbo diesel

DTS turbo kits give way better torque results than the Denco ones.

DTS claim 375kw, denco figures via turbotech website claim 390kw @0.5 bar.

Ok neither kits will get within a week of 375 Nm on a 1HZ with a safe reliable setup.
We normally see around 330Nm and 110Kw from the DTS kits,i dynoed a HZJ105R yesterday with a denco and it made 107Kw and 318Nm with safe EGT's.
A standard 100 series makes 85Kw and 260 Nm so there is good gains from fitting a turbo kit, just have to decide what one you want.
Just posting the real world information .

Hi all,
Fitted a Denco to my 80 series at 320000. The kit included a complete new exhaust system. The difference is unbelievable and economy has improved from 17.5 to 14.5 when towing my Sundowner Camper.

Thanks for the "real world" figures Matt. I was only quoting the figures that they claimed. Probably as accurate as the figures car makers make about fuel usage.

Krakka,
I also have a 1HZ in my standard 2003 Cruiser and am likewise considering fitting a turbo in the future. From recent conversations with an ExplorOz member, I was advised that when considering fitting an aftermaket turbo to a 1HZ that the existing non-turbo gearbox is not up to handling the additional power and torque. Have you likewise heard anything along the same lines and if so then what is your opinion on this matter?

The only issue with the landcruiser boxes is excess weight towing in fifth for long periods of time.
We have fitted literally hundreds of turbos to STD 100 series and not heard of any real issues with gearbox failures.

Matt,
maybe I haven't explained what I meant correctly. From factory there are apparently two different manual gearboxes for the 100 series, one for the non-turbo model and another for turbo model. I will assume that the factory turbo gearbox is stronger then the factory non-turbo gearbox. If you have fitted many turbos to the 100 series 1HZ, would you therfore recommend changing the gearbox to the factory turbo one, or is it not necessary? Unfortunately I do not kow the two different moel nymbers for these gearboxes.

Rusty
I would just leave
well enough alone,no point in my opinion.
Im not even sure if the box is different ,they aren't too many manual factory turbo 100's getting around.
Anyway mate save your money and spend it on fuel to go further across this great land of ours.

Non-turbo 1hz has R151 gearbox.
Turbo 1HD-FTE has H151 gearbox. 'H' meaning heavy duty (me thinks).
There is quite a bit of discussion and info on the LCOOL
forum about this if you do a search or ask the question.
There are a number of ways of achieving the 'change' as some of them have different bellhousings and there are, from memory some with different gear ratios.
Cheers,
Mark
