had a job a few weeks back and thought to my self that if I'd sent one of my mechanics to this job he would have stuffed every bolt as he wold have been using metric and or AF spanners....only BSW or BS would fit correctly and with most bolts/nuts being so damn tight the "rounding off" of the heads would have been inevitable...(i know mechanics..not just mine but all...no care and no responsibility)......

so went looking at second hand places ie cash robbers and the like etc etc for BSW/BS ring spanners etc and they dont keep them...when you ask some one in the store where do they all go...they dont know and the boss aint here to be able to tell you either.

oes anyone know why cant you get BSW or BS spanners/sockets etc ..even second hand?

Glad i kept mine

Probably 'cos most things are now metric.....

;-))

but there is a brand of sockets called Metrinch that are meant to fit everything! A mate who's also a fridgie has a set and swears by them, but I don't know how they'd go with the BS & BSW stuff....

musta been an old unit you were working on!!!!

Cheers

I have had a set of Metrinch for some years. Once you use it on a tight nut it tends to dent in on the flat sides making it tight for a conventional socket to fit. Anything with rounded corners or odd size it worked magic.
wouldn't be without a set with older machinery.

Nope... never to be honest, I have watched my mate use them, maybe he was lucky but they seemed to work for him...

"can do more damage then letting an apprentice at it""
that would be memories flooding back from your own apprenticeship, no??? ;-)).... LOL

"and it wasnt as old as me which makes it young "

Nah..... not going there mate!!!! LOL.....

For BS/BSW sockets/ ring& open ended spanners Google Eurotech Tools or contact WPD Australia on 1300 767 811--they have branches in all states.
I have no connection whatsoever with this company but I was in a similiar situation to yourself recently when working on an old Land Rover and was short a couple of BSW sockets but couldnt afford to buy a full set .
I contacted these people (Ray & Leonie) and they posted me out two odd sockets for FREE!!
Nothing was to much trouble for them, they even paid the postage---old time service and I would certainly purchase from them in future.!!!

Hows it going #1

You didnt specify a budget , try here.

Snap on catalogue

Looks like only a few sizes available , talk to your local dealer , or you can order them online and get them posted if you are at an out of the way place ?

Glenn.

Numero uno, Whitworth spanners are getting hard to get now to the point where there are not many available in sets any more. I just rang General Tools in Cavan & they are going to fax me a list. Snap On have them (limited range as I understand) but have you seen the price? $70 for a 3/8 BS combi spanner. What a gip!

When I get some prices from GT I'll let you know.

I've got, at home, an assortment of sockets and spanners collected over the years. But I ain't no old fart (yet) so maybe I don't need them! I've seen them for sale at swap meets and the like and they want a fortune for them.

I have some prices on a range of whitworth ring/OE spanners. They range from $27.25 for a 1/8 WHIT to $118.25 for a 3/4 WHIT (+ GST). I have no affiliation with General Tools by the way, we just use them for work because they are the best to deal with. At the prices they are now you need to insure them, along with those Picaso's and other priceless treasures. Just imagine on Antiques Roadshow "well they been in my family for nowt on 70 years - thy was me grandad's". "Well I think you out to have them insured for at least 30,000 quid". "Oh my lordy, are you serious? But thy're just spanners n'all"

And as for this.... "I ain't no old fart (yet)"...is that your opinion..:)))

YEP!

Why don't you see them at Cash Converters?

Because the low lifes in our society don't deem them valuable enough to steal!

I have a full set from my appretice days 40 years ago, and they sit in an old toolbox under a bench, but every now and then I find a nut on one of my vehicles/trailer that should be Metric or AF but isnt. and lo and behold justifies the reason I have kept them for 40 years. Still got the wife from 47 years ago also. Must be a connection there somewhere.
