Going to have a LPG system installed on my Turbo Diesel Landcruiser for better economy power etc. A local installer and a SA distributor for another brand of system have told me that because I have a Turbo Diesel the main muffler can be removed with very little increase in engine/exhaust noise, and my vehicle will meet all legal requirements (Have a rear resonator). I understand that the turbo reprocessing the engine exhaust gases cuts down the noise.

The removal of this muffler on my 60 series will also increase performance I have been told on a Landcruiser site. A number of the LC site members have also told me of the very small increase in vehicle/exhaust noise on muffler removal on a TD and I appreciate their input.

BUT, I have not heard from anyone with a TD without a main muffler towing a heavy van (ours is around 2500Kg) and the affect this has on the engine/exhaust vehicle noise at various speeds.

If you have a Landcruiser TD 60 or TD 80 series on LPG without a main muffler towing a heavy van could you pass on your thoughts to me. Thanks

I will accept a straight thru system with a slight increase in noise and its performance gain, BUT she who must be obeyed may not and I would prefer not to have to revisit my exhaust system again after the LPG install.

not the answer you are looking for but will help you a bit.

My Patrol has NO mufflers and under load it does sound like a semi climbing a hill.

At first I had the main muffler removed and there was only a slight increase in cabin noise, bit louder out the back though. But being a hoon I wanted more so out came the rear one as well. Must admit not real lady friendly but no where near as bad as some of the young blokes cars getting around.

I had a Navara 3Ltr Turbo diesel on gas. When they fitted the gas system they removed the main muffler and fitted the gas tank in its place, the resonator at the rear stayed in the system. The only difference in noise level was a slight increase at idle. In normal driving conditions and towing a 2.5 Ton van I could not tell the difference in noise level at all, in fact the engine appeared to run smoother and quieter. It also passed a vehicle inspection. Regards Nav.

Nav, Stefan,
Thanks for your replies.

Nav, re Stefan's comment about under load going up a hill is it noticeable noisier then?

My challenge is that my son owns the workshop that will fit my LPG on Diesel system and he is advising me to fit a new muffler so the exhaust noise wont annoy Mum (wife).

Regard the noise going uphill under load, in my case there was no noticeable increase in noise at all. When I was first told the muffler was going to be removed from the system I wasn't too keen on the idea at all, but was assured that I would not notice the difference. They were right except as I said at idle a little louder but hardly noticeable. Regards Nav.

Peter

Have just fitted a 3" exhaust kit, including the dump pipe, and there is only 1 straight through muffler.

Navara that we had before, basically got the same treatment, and no increase in cabin noise, just could hear the turbo whistle up.

No increase in cabin noise what so ever, not that I could tell anyway, as I have tinitus. ( my own personal built in turbo whistle )

But if there was anything loud outside SWMBO would immediately go into "SQUALK" mode, thus alerting me that there is a noise outside.

Test towed our camper trailer, at up to 120 km/h, and hard uphill, no noise probs there either. I am not real sure about a heavy van, under load

Cheers

Peter,
I have a 60 running a 12HT engine with a 3" system and a flow through muffler (hand built for $650) and yes it is a bit louder than stock but it made a huge difference with a good tune. I would still stick with something as these old gal's don't have that great an investment in sound deadening. Note I ran a side dump behind the rear wheel until I sooted up the garage a bit much but did keep soot of my camper, I requested the exhaust guy rotate it 90 deg so he added a piece and bent it straight down (why can't people please do as they are b!@#$^well asked), result was much more noise, so with saw in hand I recreated the dump and now back to tolerable levels. Please keep me posted on the gas as mine is going in a couple of months for the same conversion.
Regards
Johnny
