Was up at Mitchell Falls a couple of weeks ago. The road from GRR to Mitchell Plateau turn off is excellent. The 80km or so to Mitchell Falls camping area took me 3.75 hrs, the track is extremely corrugated, 15-20km p/h most of the way. I would asume that the track further to Walsh Point would be in much better condition, not getting the same amount of traffic. Although the last winding bit to Walsh Point could be a bit tricky with a boat but possible. Hope that helps
Cheers

Yep. Was up there a few weeks ago. A 20km section on the Mitchell Falls Rd was hell and plenty of shocks were being done. The graders were working on it though.

Understand from talking to the people at Drysdale River Station and some tour operators it's graded once a year but this year was being graded for the second time.

Walsh Point is a dog to get into. The track beyond Surveyors Pool is usually washed out in sections and not maintained. The beach camping is sometimes rat infested and sand flies and mozzies are a big problem. Tides are much bigger than Kalumburu and you need to get your boat out each night. Launching for bigger boats on the rocky beach is not easy. In my view spend your time at McGowans as the access is a lot easier, the boat can be left in the water, fishing in close or out is excellent, and launching a lot easier. You can use the barge landing at Marra Garra for launching and retrieving if you want to as it is concrete.

I was up Kalumburu way about 6 weeks ago. The road up to Kalumburu is farily good. It deteriorated after Theda station but is still not too bad. Just take it slow.

The turn off to Mitchell falls as mentioned before is heavily corrugated, I don't know about going 20km/h, I needed to go at least 50kmh to avoid going down into every corrugation and rattling my teeth loose. A lot of traffic and thanks to all of those people towing on this road. When we were there 5 people had towed in huge Bushtracker caravans! Can't go without microwaves for a couple of nights I suppose.

Anyway, From everything I heard there isn't really much point in going further north of the falls due to poor roads and insects everywhere. There are 2 fishing places to camp at Kalumburu, Mcgowans is the better camping ground (can go trawling in the river mouth) but Honeymoon has the better access to fishing spots.

Just noticed in your profile that you have been to Kulumburu before in the mouth of the King Eddie. Stay away from the new moon and you should catch some good fish. Enjoy.
