Does anybody have any experience with Unipower Alternators fitted as a replacement for the standard 100 series alternator
www.unipower.com.au claim that you can have 240v power at the flick of a switch and the 185 model can provide welding capability.

I had a unipower fitted to my Holden 1 tonner in 1985.
Incredible piece of equipment, and very useful.
It could drive a 3.25mm (10 guage) low hydrogen rod for welding no trouble.
The 240 power that it supplies is (was) not suitable for induction type motors as it was/is 240V DC. I used on many occasions to jump start the grader (24V) and it did this effortlessly.
I also used it on one occasion to jump start the plane (28V) with a bit of fiddling with the hand throttle of the car to get the 28 volts.

I don't think that you can weld on the vehicle that it is fitted to, but it may be worth checking this out.

Quite an expensive piece of equipment, but if it can be justified, it is well worth the money. I think that it is rated at 3KVa or close to it.

No affiliation etc.

Hi , Thanks for you response. I had one fitted to my boat as a slave to the main engine and it also worked well. I will be happy if the unit has an regulator that stops overcharging which was a problem back then in the early '80s.

i have fitted a few to emergancy vehicles they work well , they can over charge easily and few people repair them . found that if mounted separately and independant of charging system they worked well , major draw backs included mounting (finding room )to mount the controll box.

Syd.
Unipower are a funny company. They will not repair the units and they will not give you a cct so you can repair it yourself, I have 2 of them not working and they won't help me except sell me another one. When they work they are good but they don't last long.
Eric.
