we have been quoted 2 - 3 hours to replace a worn alternator belt on our 100 series diesel. Thought it was excessive. Anyone know if it sounds reasonable ?

And that 1/2 hour should include their smoko break.

Cheers Steve.

Steve, i have a TD Troopy, i did the aircon belt a while back, piece of cake. Re the fan belts,do any of the other belts need to be removed to change them or can the belts just be slid over the fan once completly slack?

Why don't you do it yourself, better to learn at home than out in the desert where you do it or die.

Agree with Doug, if you go bush on your own and have spare belts, better to know how to do it, and gain experience at home. Any problems you can call mobile mechanics

To get them changed, you need to take off the air belt then get to the alt adjuster....it isnt a given that you will have the correct tools, but it isnt going to hurt to have a go in the driveway. Toyota dont make vee belts, so save extra by buying aftermarket...
I would take at a guess an hour to do the job....are the belts ratty or squeeling?? a simple adjustment only takes 5 minutes if they are squeeling....

actually dozer I think you will find it can be done with the crappy factory tool kit.
Just a tip or the unwary with the air con belt. the nut running through the centre of the adjusting pully has to be undone before you can back the tension off to remove the belt

I wont say impossible, Toyota have a pretty good selection of spannards, but that bolt your talking about for the air tensioner, which is 14mm....try undoing that with a Toyota openender...not impossible but easily rounded off...
The best mechanic to find is one which owns and drives a cruiser...cheaper than Toyota and probably better than their apprentices too.

Change all belts at the same time and carry the "good" ones as spares. This way you know they will fit if required in the future and also know that next week you won't have another belt to replace.

Desley.. Why not have a go at it yourself, i know it's not for everyone but its a good way to start learning something if you are not mechanically minded, maybe you are but choose not to do it. It also allows you to get a picture of how the front of the motor is laid out if you have a problem if you are out and about off the beaten track.. MIchael
