hi all

i have a 1986 landcruiser 2H engine, i have a problem with my glow plug relay. this engine has 2 relays the first comes on for about 20 to 25 secs and then turns off, no problem there. but a seleniod also opens and sends charge to the glow plug bar, this selenoid use to power up for about a minute or so then power off. the problen is that this seleniod does not power of now. The switch as power all the time, i followed the wires till is disappears into the wiring harness but as to where the relay for this one has me stumped. in the engine bay have two big relays one for starter motor other for glow plugs which is working fine. does anyone know where the power to this second soleniod source is located. if i pull the engine fuse then this second selenoid looses its power but so does the engine it shuts down. i have unplugged the soleniod for now but not sure if the motor will start with only 15 to 20 secs of glow.

any help would be greatly recieved

After much trouble with my 60 series glow plugs system I finally ditch it altogether. Do not know about all of 60-s, but mine has dummy relay that was activated plugs for 20-30 sec each time regardless what temperature outside and want coolant temperature is. 80 has far more intelligent system BTW. Thus it was leading to premature battery wear – I have replaced 2 of them (mind you, there was good batteries, not cheap stuff!!) in 3 years. Plus whole setup in 60 very doggy – they have “super glow plug” that preheat air and 6 6 volts (yep, 6 volts) glow plugs connected in parallel in series with “super” one. That means if any of cylinder plugs go off, then voltage on rest of them increases and they became go off one by one in few month! Glow plugs not cheap either, so this pre-heat system cost me an arm and a leg in my old 60.

Patently 60 LC cannot be started without glow plugs because it uses “indirect” (do not ask me what that means) injections. Again 80 is better design and can be started without glow plugs at all – just require few more cranks. So that what I have done. I have installed 6 12v glow plugs and connect them directly to original solenoid by-passing “master” one at all. Then instead of connecting solenoid to stupid relay I put direct button on dashboard. First things in the morning I depress button for few seconds before crank. Colder morning would require 15 sec while summer one only 5. With hot engine I never used glow plugs – just crank it. For 5 years I have not replaced even one glow plug and been using the same battery. Coldest temperature where I have started my modified 60 was about –5 degrees in Kosciusko NP.

Good Luck

60s can be started without glow plugs with moderate cranking and freezing morings.
I ended up getting he same type button you speak of in. the modules are expensive even from a wrecker.,
Guy that did it said
"we used to do this a fair bit when there was more of em round"

Dono, mate. Perhaps due to very pedestrian compression I never had been successful to start my 60 without glow plugs – either by cranking or pushing. Again in comparison 80 can be started by pushing it for mere 3 meters. Coming to topic I never understand why they was trying to make such agricultural machinery as my 60 “idiot-friendly”. Obviously such car not for everyone and button on dash IMHO heaps better solution. I was thinking to bastardize preheat system in 80, but it is far more intelligent and so far works OK. But if it miss only once it will go to rubbish bin in favor to button.

thanks for your help guys most welcome.

have been playing all nite and found the pre timer unit and did as the book says. found the switch on top of teh engine to be faulty and unplugged it found it caked in slit from many a muddy engine was down. so have cleaned it all up and as engine is now warm will have to wait till tomorrow to see if that is what caused it. if not a trip to the toyota let me charge you a mad price for that part sir.

will let you know, just incase some other person has the same trouble one day they can save loads of time by checking what i have found thus far :-)

thanks agin
