You really need to think about where your going to need it.

We hired a SATPHONE for a recent trip.

We travelled across to Adelaide from the Gold Coast, including the Louth/Tilpa route from Bourke to Wilcannia. We had Telstra Next G coverage almost all of the way just with the hand held phone.

I was beginning to think the SATPHONE was a waste of money, until we hit the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks, then no Next G coverage again until we got to Charleville, including Birdsville.

If you want something for an emergency then you might want to consider an EPIRB.

EPIRBS will locate you, but they don't help if you have a mechanical breakdowna or a medical emergency...which might be at home. Yes you'll probably be rescued, but...

..if I recollect someone had an Iridium sat phone for sale just the other day, only used three times, I think around $A 900. Just search 'posts' on sat phone, there are deals out there, and the trader posts, too.

I just 'know' we all just 'love' Telstra, but when a mere 8 execs can pick up $A46 million for a years work, it's worth a double check, ...no?

Telstra and all the other wankers want your money and dont even know where the outback is !!

Now get real and buy an HF radioo..such as Barrett or the other mob ...and dont think about those fancy Sat Phones that even the Police in the Outback know are a piece of bleep ..they do not work everywhere !! ...Just ask the cops out there ..they have them and bag them !!!

HF radio doesnt always work everywhere either, being subject to weather and atmospheric conditions.
AN Iridium phone should work if it can see the sky.

The Pivotel ones may work if you pray hard enough

Telstra know where the outback is. Its the 90% of Australia they dont service.

They want you to believe they cover everyone but they dont say the 98% of the population that they do service live in less than 10% of the land area of the country.

I guess they think we are all as stupid as them.

Mary & Steve,

if your regular mobile is Next G, and your SIMcard is activated for international roaming, slip it into the satphone and try to make a call.

You will have to enter numbers like you are overseas. F'rinstance, if your home number is 07 8765 4321 then do this:

press the 0 (zero) until you get a + (plus) sign. Then enter 61.

Then dropping the zero from your area code enter 787654321.

If you are ringing a mobile number do the same and drop the first zero from the mobile number.

This way you only get charged for the calls you make (and receive unfortunately) at the rate of $5 per minute, but no contract and your family doesn't have to remember a new number. They just ring your mobile as normal.

Your mobile can't have any bars on ringing numbers that start with 1900 either, or it won't work.

cheers
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
