First of all. Many thanks to those who responded.

The Son in Law connected the hard drive up to his computer and managed to save all the old historical data. Pretty happy about that and one thing is for sure, I’m going to buy an external hard drive for back up.

But the misery hasn’t ended yet. With new software installed, Outlook Express has decided to work part time and will only receive incoming messages. Every time I reply to a message, or attempt to send a new message, it pretty much tells me to buggar off.

After an hour on the phone with the ISP provider checking everything he came to the conclusion if was a software problem.
Talk about being gobsmacked. Last thing I would have thought of !!!.

Got me thinking about these gadgets. Good to have, but I wouldn’t rely on them in the bush. There’s still something to be said about maps, a compass and bush skills.

Any way we’ll get there eventually (unless I decide to shoot the bloody thing).

LOL

Regards

Kim

Gidday Steve

Buggar!

How's your trip going ? I've managed to look at a couple of your posts before the computer went down.

Where are you now?

If outlook express wont send messages it is probably because in your account you put the wrong thing in the outgoing mail server name.
Go to outlook express Tools/accounts/mail/properties/servers and check that the outgoing mail server has the correct name in there. If you have misspelt it it wont send mail.
Thats the usual reason for that problem. If you arent sure of the correct name ask your ISP for the settings

A very good file recovery program is called Getdataback Fat or Getdataback NTFS.
I actually Fdisked and formatted a drive ( at 2 am in the morning) when trying to reinstall Windoze.
Destroyed the wrong drive. Got quoted $800 to recover the files 28gig of them.
Looked around the net and found this program and 4 hours later it reconstructed the drive perfectly.
One thing to remember is
NEVER WRITE ON IT AFTER YOU LOSE THE STUFF.
If you do, you lose even more as the recovery programs cant find the necessary clusters.
Deleting a file only removes the first letter of the file name so then windoze cant find it. Its just the same as in the old DOS days when you could type Undelete and rename it and get it back that way
Formatting isnt so bad as it basically just removes the boot sector ( or index) which tells windoze where everything is. The program can reconstruct this and so finds the data..
The putting it in the freezer can work but is not recommended exept as a last resort.
Hope you get it sorted and Office Works are selling 500gb external drives for $99 at the moment
