For anybody who's after a cheap fridge, I noticed that Repco have a couple of cheap 3 way fridges at the moment

They may not be Chescolds, but from $299 are pretty good buys considering what else you get for that kind of money

Here is the link to the $299 Gasmate at Repco:

Happy camping, Will.

Probably ok and better than nothing but they are an absorbtion system, no compressor, and probably have fairly limited cooling.. Anyway the price is right.. Michael

A lot has been said on 3 way fridges. They're no compressor, but at a third of the price it won't break the bank.

Sure the Gasmate won't freeze like a Chescold could, but compared with the other option for the money (thermoelectric), it seems like the better option.

I've got one of these 'gasmate' fridges. Works brilliantly on 240V. Had it in an annexe during four days of 36 Deg + and the beer nearly froze . Had to turn it down to stop the wifes lettuce burning from the cold!!!
Brother -in-law took it shooting a while ago and used the gas and thought it was great. Just have to give these things a chance to cool down before you get away.

It's listed in the link in one of the aboves at $399 for 45L and no tie down handles. I'm not buying one again that doesn't have handles that can be tied down don't care how much it is.

I've got a 40 litre chestcold and it works well on 240 and gas but is absolutely useless on 12 volt.
Did a trip in the Gulf (Woolergarang to Robinson River) for 2 weeks and had the fridge on 12v during the day as we were scrub bashing (no track where we were behind the sand dunes) and had to take the fridge out and run it on gas all night to cool it.
Since then I have bought 2 x 40 litre Engels and have never looked back. Don't waste your money. Unless you are going to be stationary for a while and run it on gas buy a compressor fridge

The 3 way fridges are fine if you intend to be away for a while as they take a long time to cool. I find if u put some ice in during the turn on period 6-8 hours it helps. Once they are up and running they are very effective running on gas etc, forget 12v for these.
Compressor fridges like the Waeco and Engel start working almost immediately and can freeze real quick etc etc but need some current to keep going which is fine.

Both have their places as long as you understand their design principles. Don't forget your 3 way needs to be on level ground to work properley.

No doubt compressor fridges are the way to go if you've got power.

It would be interesting to see how a cheap 3 way fridge like the Gasmate at Repco compares using 12volt to a Waeco thermoelectric of similar capacity and price.

I think a 3 way would probably perform just as well as a thermoelectric on 12volt, yet it also has the benefits of gas power.

Ranger camping told me the 3way uses 2x the power of a similar sizex wacko on 12v.
