Minipa to Kingoonya through the Gawler Ranges and Lake gardiner

Hi all, we are planning a trip to Perth from Alice Springs, and would like to cut out Port Augusta and save some time. We can shortcut through Lake Gardiner and the Gawler ranges, and end up in Minnipa, does anyone know what this road is like and would we be saving much in the way of time and Kilometers? Any information appreciated.

We came through there towing a caravan 12 months ago. The road was very good. Apparently it is well maintained because it is now a recognised short cut. I believe the pub at Kingoonya has been revived and they had plans for a basic caravan park there.

The road itself has a couple of rocky sections but is largely sand and smooth.

There are some beautiful natural meadows to camp in particularly in the southern half of the track. We stopped at about 2pm to set up camp because the campsites were irresistable. Then we saw more and wished we had time to stop a couple of more nights.

You will enjoy it.

Did it a few years ago with offroad van. Was a very good, easy road, and an interesting drive. Recommend a stay at Mt Ive Station. They will give you key to access Lake Gairdner on their property and that is well worth doing.

A lovely drive - and an alternative to the highway.
