The loses in the coax from your antenna is high so make it as short as possible.
I have found the Navway made by Melway has bush tracks on it. A few days ago it took me up a track along a pipe line that was very challenging. Eric

On the Chev, when I bought it, the Safari snorkel head had a metal plate glued (Sikaflex or similar) to it. The remote antenna are usually magnetised, so it was a great place to mount it I suppose. Unfortunately, I never thought I'd need it, so swapped the head for the one I already had on my old Patrol and off it went with the new buyer.

I've since bought a Nuvi 660 and recently found I needed an external antenna too. I've just run it out of the driver's door and sat it on the metal bit in front of the windscreen , just beside the guard, behind the bonnet. Still get good reception there.

Hey Bundy,

I had an external GPS antenna on 2 different vehicles over eight years and never had a problem. Its a Garmin Magnetic low profile one that sits on the roof just in from the drivers door. Has RG174 cable (very thin) that runs under then down the rubber door seal.

Works great and although the cable has formed to some tight bends, it still works perfectly.

Regards
David

Years ago we used Trimble GPS', back in the 'GPS dark ages'. We had the external antenna mounted on a bracket that was screwed to the front edge of the roof rack with cable exiting via the door opening. If you have no roof rack the top of the snorkel sounds like a good spot. 3M make a really good double sided tape in various widths. Not sure of the tape model or name but I've used it in the past to tape tooling board & wood to the tables of our CNC machining centres for machining models. Its a pig to clean off afterward.

I had a Garmin winscreen mount where the actual antenna was screwed to a small plate. This enabled me to screw the mounting plate direct to the snorkel and ditch the suction cups and run the cable down the back of the snorkel and in via the door seal.
I have had a little water follow the cable down past the seal but no real drama, works fine.
