Hello everybody, have just been flicking through the manual and turned to the page about the Power Take Off. Are these things still available? Are they easy to install? I've also had a look at all the mounting provisions for the mechanical winch on my vehicle and was wondering if anyone here has had some experience with these winches? Are they also still available for this vehicle (do they have the same mounting pattern, etc?) How much $$$ would it cost to get a PTO and eventually a PTO powered winch?

Cheers.

Hi there,
I bought a 2nd hand PTO for my 1979 HJ45 in about 1993 for about $750 complete. It was a genuine Toyota one. I think Thomas or Ramsay also made one. Fitting was easy except the PTO gears meshed too tightly into the transfer case at first so I had to make up an extra thick gasket. They have a shear pin in the front part of the drive shaft which protects the winch from overload. It was fantastic. It is a shame the 100 series is not designed to fit one as it would be my first choice.

Had a Thomas 10000 lb PTO for 15 years or so on my 60 series, it put the electric winches to shame but unfortunately can't fit it to my 80 series. If you have the facility (PTO takeoff on gearbox) go for it.

We were bogged to the door handles in black soil in the Gulf a couple of years back (had to climb out the windows) two electric winches on mates cars just stopped pulling but I used a snatch block to the two vehicles (both tied to trees) and the PTO just ground out in 1st gear.

Only drawback is motor must be running so no good if you dunk in creek and motor stops, with electric you can pull for short time to get engine out of water. Must say I never stalled out in water in 19 years so probably not a consideration.

Should be second hand PTO's now as newer vehicles don't have PTO gearboxes anymore.
