When changing the oil filter on my 1HZ (75 series) I lose a bit down the side of the engine. I've seen some 1HZs with a lip type catcher around the filter to catch the drips. Any ideas if they're a standard fitting or an accessory??

They stop the drips but then you still have to clean the residual oil spilt in them. I am going to modify
mine to have a drain pipe down to the bottom of the sump.
I think they are a standard fitting.
Cheers Kev

Yep, it IS PITA – does not matter what you do, you still going to 5h1t yourself and engine bay with oil. I am wrapping rug at the filter base to minimize that pleasant effect.

About 1/2 I've seen have, and others not.
Must have been if the 'Oil Filter Drip Catcher Fitter' on the assembly line was working on that day or not !!!!

If you let the oil drain down to the sump overnight and change the filter the next day it will be empty and you will not spill so much oil. Yes there is a non-return valve in the filter but it's obviously not perfect.
You can still drain the oil when it's hot if you want - just don't forget to refill - maybe put
the tub of oil on the front
seat so you don't forget.

Standard fitting on my 100 series 1HZ. When my vehicle was under warranty I took it to the big name Toyota Dealer near me for a service. Afterwards when i walked out of my garage I saw huge pools of oil on the driveway. On checking this drip tray was full of oil. Remembering this was a major Toyota dealer I got the s5its and rang them demanded they clean my driveway. Bottom line they coughed up $50 for me to do it. If Toyota can't get this right how can they be trusted on anything serious?????

I've been battling this issue for some time, but the last time I changed the oil, I just accepted that it was going to be messy, so thought to get the filter off as FAST as possible. In doing so, I didn't spill a drop. Don't quite know how this happened, but am going to try again next time (though I suspect I'll end up with oil from ar$ehole to breakfast time).
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Signman,
Another way to reduce the oil spill is to punch a screwdriver point through the filter before removal to allow air in and oil out before you screw it off. I do it and it does help a lot.

I wrap a rag around the base and most of the spillage gets soaked up by that.

G'day Signman,
Both my last two 1HZ 100series had/have it. Maybe, some of the 7* series missed out. Surely Toyota would have them...? may have to sit down for the price though. Can't find a part no. on the service CD but it's is called an oil receiver and shows up in a lot of schematics for the Toyota diesel engines.
Cheers,
Ross.

I just figured out I did 70 oil changes on my HZJ80 and only ever put a rag underneath and let most of the sump drain first. Rarely got more than a bit of oil on the rags. Now I have a HZJ105R with
the drip catcher and spill more oil than ever. It pools in the catcher and makes it harder to get a rag underneath. When I had a service at Toyota, they also didn't clean
the drip catcher and I had oil down the side of the engine.
