Im thinking about putting a power chip into my LR Disco Td5.

Current ones on the market indicate that they are able to increase the power and torge by about 15%.

This extra power would be great, especially when towing my camper off road.

I guess my question is, are they as good as what they are cranked up to be, or do they put undue stress and wear on the engine, drivetrain and other components?

See you on our travels

Dolfn,
I went to Cape York last year with a fellow who had a Td5 Disco towing a Trek camper which was fitted with a chip. He claimed it made a big improvement when towing. I have just fitted a Dtronics chip plus a few other things to my 100 series TD and have had a 35% improvement. It has made a huge difference when towing my Kimberly camper. There is now almost no turbo lag.

"The catch" is simply that the manufacturer make their vehicles to cater for the lowest common octane or cetane number so they can sell them in as may countries without having to tune them to local requirements. We have higher minimum octane petrol as standard (91 vs 87) and I believe the situation is similar for the cetane number of diesel.

John

I also have a TD 100 series. Besides the power increase have you noticed any fuel usage differences.

Paul T,
I have only had the power up for 3 weeks and am still doing the numbers. I was told that under load I should get better numbers and about the same for round town. On my first refuel I obtained 620k out of 85lts. This was all round town and apears the be about the same as pre power up. Under load I don't know yet. It is noted that my car is a manual and with the manuals you notice the turbo lag more than the autos

Regards john.
