Hi, just wondering if anyone has towed an Ultimate Camper (or similar - around 1 tonne laden) up the
Toowoomba Range. We have a petrol Prado.

Geez Mark
Was the truck empty or loaded? you would have got a bit of a surprise, doing it the first time, I used to drive up there on a regular basis years ago, when I worked for Gilbarco fixing Fuel Pumps from
Toowoomba out to Mitchel, I lived out of a Suit Case and stayed in
the Pubs, thats when I was single, with out a care and plenty of
hair.
Cheers

Drive up the range all the time....with a KK and a diesel pajero.
You should have no problems, take it easy, there are two pull-over areas if you are worried.
The road surface has been fixed up recently and is in good condition, with speed limits reduced for all. (90km at bottom, reducing to 70km and then 60....helps control some silly manouvres at speed)

I should add that if you haven't been up there before, take a look at the
Google Maps Streetview of the range....just like driving up it. :-)

Hi
We towed our Van up the Range a couple of months back, had no
problems, as said previously take your time, we did it with our
Nissan Navara that we traded recently, the van weighs just over
2200kg at times we dropped down to 2nd gear but all was ok.
Cheers

Defender 110 tdi and van, maybe 1.9 tonne - towed up the range a couple of times. Is a slow climb - but worse coming down!!

Tip for driving up the range slowly: get behind a loaded truck in the left lane and stay there. Keep a respectable distance just in case, but that will avoid the temptation to push a little bit harder than you should and overheat or damage the transmission.

Is it an auto or a manual??? If it's a manual just keep your revs in the sweet zone... Not lugging down low & not revving it's ring out. If it's an auto it should sort all that stuff out for you unless you want to play with manual selection but I see no real advantage in doing that, just take it steady & don't push it, if everything is in good order it will be a snack.
As an after thought with the auto, consider getting an after market tranny cooler just to cover all bases, doing the range on a hot day would test the efficiency of the tranny cooling system, also dragging the camper through sand would be a real challenge for it.
Cheers 2TGs

I live in
Toowoomba and tow a ski boat (1.5T) up all the time with a diesel landcruiser. Your petrol Prado will eat it! Be careful towards the top as the corners are blind and even at 60kmh if you are in the left lane you can come around a corner and find a truck doing 5kmh and you have to stop pretty quick. I always use the right lane going up or down in the 60 zone (this is legal) to avoid these situations.

You can actually avoid the steep climb but adds about 45 minutes to your journey. As you get through
Ipswich, the highway divides between the
Warrego, which goes direct to
Toowoomba, or the Cunningham which goes a little south, signposted toward
Warwick I think. The Cunningham joins up with the
New England Highway a little ways south of Toowomba and you can get to
Toowoomba that way without the steep climb. All good roads.

I assume going this way you don't actually go as far as to have to go over
Cunninghams gap as that would be just as steep as the T range?

Why do people worry about hills on major highways that trucks go up all the time ??? I wouldn't even ask the question about a van unless it was some dirt road with extreme gradient and tight corners.

Come on fellas there are some good points though. This fella hasn't seen it and is asking a simple question. We too live at the top and the only time there is trouble coming at you is in the wet dont sit behind slow trucks on the saddle as they do loose traction we know because its happened. The worst thing about the range is the down section and the bloody camera at the top.
If you are worried, it will do you the world of good to tackle it and learn to over come it.
