Hi all, we are thinking of using the CREB track next year as part of a planned trip and was wondering if anyone has towed a camper trailer along this track. Travellers with us would be taking their camper trailer and I am looking for some feedback before suggesting this track to them. Thanks for any info. Jan

Towed an ultimate with 4.2 Nissan last year bout this time
No problems but would not recommend this track for a camper unless very confident and experienced as things could get nasty quickly. I found the track easy with only one really steep hill that required 1st low from bout two thirds the way up.
But it is continually up and down and if you get half way in, and it gets too hard, it maybe just as hard to go back

Others will tell you about the wet slippery clay but it was dry when we were there.

Have fun
Jim

Thanks Jim, he is a very experienced driver, and of course we would check that the track is dry first. Was worried with what I had heard about the steepness of the tracks, so thanks for this info. By the way are you enjoying the ultimate?? We still tent it, but there have been times when a camper trailer sure seems good. Have just returned from the Hay River Track, but got prickly thorns in through the groundsheet and into the air mattress. Bugger!!

Yep the Ultimate is tops. Easy to tow and set up.
And light enough for a wheezy old Nissan to tow over the Creb
Air mattress is now considered swearing in our house!

We went from north to south and it may be less of an uphill climb in this direction I am not sure. Its certainly a beaut drive and I would do it again.

Cheers Jim

All depends on the condition at the time. It can be almost impassable, but if it's dry you could probably get through- depending on the quality of the camper and the ability of the driver. It's really a decision that has to be made at the time, not in advance.

Thanks Tessa, will certainly hope for a dryer 'dry season' next year. Jan

We towed our Ultimate camper down the CREB in July this year .

the track was wet with occassional light rain .

Most difficult section was the original crossing of Bloomfield river .

We travelled North -South in beautiful rainforest .

Try the Maytown track on the way up if you have good ground

clearance .

Ground camping is definitely out now , we take the ct

everywhere .

Cheers John & Suz

The Creb is definately more of a challenge travelling south-north, and regardless what other advice you get I certainly would not risk towing a camper through if it is evenly slightly wet.Iwent through in Sept. '04 from south to north when the track was a bit wet and I had some scary moments. The day before they pulled out a 4wd that ended up on its roof.Ithink I have a pic of the start of the trek on my profile pics.It sure is a lovely bit of country but check conditions before committing to towing.

I don't think it is an issue. If the track is open then you should be able to get through with a camper trailer. I've towed a Coromal camper through in light rain with no problems. Electric brakes are good for the one steep descent but that is sealed now anyway. Also made several trips with a normal camper trailer and as usual when towing, just take it easy. Depending on the time of year, I've seen sedans drive through for a Sunday picnic!

You are referring to the Bloomfield track (coast rd), not the Creb Track. They are not the same tracks.

My apologies Mark S, you are quite right, I was mistakenly referring to the Bloomfield track. The only time I have done the CREB track was in 1982 on a motorbike and found it very difficult in rain and couldn't make it up one of the steep hills and had to turn back.

yeap, motorbiikes are a handful on a wet creb track!
Came back thru once from home rule, and was fine at the start, then it closed in near the top - clouds, drizzle etc.
Came across a bloke & young kid on a motorbike, who could not get up the hill. Wet hard clay, (and it's not as steep on the north side as it is on the south side). Only way we got his bike up was to tie a long rope to it , and skull-drag it from the top (where it was flat & you didn't fall over). We took his kid out the rest of the way (he was doubling him on the bike!), and had to leave the bloke to ride the rest on his own, after he drowned the engine on the next creek crossing. Showed him what he needed to do to get it going again, but with the rain starting to set in, If I did not get out of there quick smart, I would be in there for a few days. Waited back at the Daintree village, and advised authorities of the Biker in there that may not get out.Well, after a couple of hours, the biker turned up at the daintree, totally covered in mud. All good in the end, but by christ that track will bite you in the wet stuff.
Since then heard all sorts of stories about dramas in the wet - hardcore 4wd's with chains gettting stranded - bike riders stranded

cheers
Mark

I have done this track numerous times both ways over the years. It's a day trip when u live up here.
I think you'd want to have brakes on your camper, and clear skies.
If you have that, coupled with a bit of experience, should be no dramas.
All comes down to condition of track & creek crossings.
South to North, as mentioned, has more uphill than North to South. Weather can decieving up there. Can be fine at the Daintree down the bottom, and rain/drizzle up near the top.
The areas that people come to grief on are the rutted hills with hardpacked clay. As soon as this gets wet, you a flat out standing on it!
Remember to air down the tyres a bit - believe me, it does help.
The other issue you may have next year is whether it will be re-opened again. There's always the bloomfield track (coast rd) if it's not

cheers
Mark

We did the CREB last year in October with our CT and there were a few wet bits but by and large we had no trouble. CT came in at just under 1 tonne towing with 80 series. If it's wet, forget it but is good fun and a great experience.

Hello,
The Gall brothers who make Kedron caravans towed a fullsize tandem axle off road caravan through this track with a 76 series V8 diesel landcruiser.
You can buy the video of their trip, quite an interesting DVD.
So a camper should be ok.
Regards Alan.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful info. We will add it to our plan, but check to see the conditions when we get to the gate. At least we can always choose another route if it is closed. Many thanks once more,
Jan
