I have just acquired a new winch and need your expertise on storage of the hook.
I have seen some doubled back under the vehicle to a tow mount etc but this seems to put a very severe sharp turn in the cable.
What is the best storage location for the hook????

I've taken the hook off- replaced with a rated shackle (which you'd probably use most of the time anyway)- and fed it up to the fairlead under slight tension...

mine hooks back to a tie down point, but it's not under tension...
It's just tight enough that it can't shake out, but I can get it out without backing out the winch if i have too.

I have my winch cable pulled in just like the above pic, however I noticted ALL the Army's L/rovers & unimogs that have
winches, have the cables loose with the hooks tied back with some light string.
The cables have no tension on them as the string they are using would only cope with the weight of the hook, There must be a reason why they have it this way, generally speaking, the Army does its research into such things.

Thanks for all the ideas.
Guess that is the great value of such a
forum.
