hi all,

i thought some of you be able to help me with my leaking diff problem. as half of you have probably done your time in a 60 series.

my 60 series makes a horrible mess under the car if i push it to 110km/h for an hour or so.
the diff oil seems to be coming from around the top of the main diff gasket and the breather appears clear.
i can tonk along at 90km/h towing for days - but when im not towing - and cruising along - it will spray oil all under the vehicle. after ive mopped up the mess - not another drop will appear.

any ideas most appreciated.

cheers.

You really need to determine the exact location of the leak.
I had a similar problem (not always leaking) which was actually coming through the pinion seal.
A new preload spacer and seal and nut was the permanent cure. You cannot re use the spacer, it controls the bearing pre load.

As furfh said, the pinion seal is a common problem in the 60.

Hi Swampy
You could have slightly worn universal joints or the tail shaft may be out of balance causing vibration and just pushing it up a little in speed can cause the pinion seal to leak. As suggested change the seal first before looking at the Diff gasket.
The oil is probably spraying up and back due to the wind and turbulence under the Cruiser giving the appearance of a leak at the top of the diff.

I replaced my Diff pinion seal ever couple of years with the same problem.

Rod,

is changing the drive pinion oil seal rocket science - or is it simply done by removing the tail shaft - nut, flange and flicking out the old seal?

thanx again
