Hi All,

We are about to venture into WA and have heard through the grape vine that you cannot have any "Normal" crab pots as you would use in say NT or QLD in your possession even if you do not use them. I have looked extensively at the rules and all it states is that you must not use traps just the hoop type for catching crabs. I cannot find anywhere where it states you cannot leave them in your car and not use them. Can any one shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance

Goona

I would guess that you are not breaking the law unless you are caught using them.A similar situation exists with "opera house" type nets used for catching cherabin. They are illegal to use in W.A yet you can buy them legally in WA to be transported for use in the Noerthern Territory so I suppose the same applies in the reverse bringing your crab pots into WA.Still better check with fisheries to be sure, but I certainly wouldn't be too bothered.

Just make sure there not traps mate and you will be fine. Dont want ya coming in with traps and taking all our crabs. Rules are rules and there put in place for a reason. If the crab is not trapped in there and can get out freely then your fine. There is plenty of crabs over here that ya done need the traps mate, we get our crabs by hand at low tide. No need for getting the boat dirty, or setting pots with stinken baits, just scour the mangroves at low tide and bobs ya uncle.

I'm fairly sure you can't use traps for native species anywhere. I know you can use traps to get red claw up the ord river scheme as they are introduced.

Thanks all to those that have replied. I spoke to the guy at the NT/WA border this morning and he advised that as long as you are not using them then I will be right especially with the interstate number plates I have on.

Great out come. I am all for the rules and they need to be enforced.
