I think so.
What does the plate on your towbar say for towing capacity?
What does your driver handbook say for towing capacity?
cheers

If you don't exceed towbar weight, the GCM (see post 22567) or the towing capacity you're legal. But I don't think it would be pleasant combo to drive powerwise.
It all depends where you want to go and how fast you want to get there.
What model hilux is it?

Oh and don' forget the GVM of the vehicle, includes tare + fuel etc plus passengers plus gear plus the towball load which should be about 10 percent of trailer weight eg about 200kg.

I have towed an off road camper trailer GVM of approx 1t with the 3L TD for a number of years and trips
Handles that weight Ok when maintaing a constant highway speed or travelling off road....for example that combination has done the GRR, Great Central and around the Alice.........Rudall River NP several times and most of the Beadell tracks
there has been times on those trips when I could have done with more grunt..particularly in the sandy sections and river xings..but driven sensibly and knowing your vehicle and limitations we have always come home and never had any serious issues with that combinbation of vehicle and weight
on the highway and needing power and response to pass is another issue and a passing a road train needs planning and a 2 way conversation with the truckie before you attempt...the wind vacumm you get when sitting behind him is a false sense of how much power you have when you get out along side!...we always ask them and state we need a long safe run
well foward...they have the better view than us at our ground level and we wait until called around
having said that ours is a safe combination driven within its boundaries
to tow the weight you are talking about I would definately not contemplate it...not only the extra weight but the profile and wind drag of the van would be unwise and in my opinion unsafe
PS we have upgraded to the 4.5 TD V8 and now look forward to the passing of road trains it is like a jet engine compared to the previous years !
regards
bungurra
however for safety in overtaking or if / when a fast response of power is required it is not there!

the best course of action is to get one behind your hilux and try it out ...maybe for a weekend if you can or at least for sufficient time to get to to some roads where you can try a highway speed and a few inclines
if the dealer or salesperson is not hapy about a towing trial then I guess they already know the answer to what you seek!
tare weight of the van is one thing but add a few bits of gear inside plus a full
water tank and whatever is on / in your vehicle for the trip and it all adds up

I tow a 2000Kg ATM off road van with my current model 3LTD Hilux, does it OK but yes you have to plan passing, not heaps in reserve. But they auto transmission cooling problems. Toyota Aust. know about it but refuse to do anything about it. So I could get away on holiday have fitted after market oil cooler at my dealers recommendation, Toyota will not pay for but have written that this will not effect my warranty. Not sure if the 2250Kg towing capacity is realistic. Toyota Aust. have several complaints and I queried other owners on our trip and it is a problem. They will not act as the number of complaints is a very small percentage of vehicles sold. I said if you are only getting the bread and milk or towing the garden trailer it won't be a problem, it's when you load up for a trip.
Ian.
