If you haven't changed you driving style there may be a problem.

If it's a concern why don't you get it put on the dyno and get the emissions checked.

Might also pay to check for any fault codes in the ECU.

Could be injectors, timing, a faulty sensor, vacuum problem, throttle body, exhaust or a number of other things.

Plugs, leads and air filter will not make you use more fuel, if it had a lack of power or ran rough that wold be a different story.

Maybe it's just a Landcruise petrol!

I have a 97 80series which gets around 16 to 17L/100kms on the Hwy and about 20L around town. Towing and working hard she sees up to 35L/100kms hence why its now running at half the price on gas injection!
Yours does seem to burn a bit more than mine on petrol, but the earlier 80s were heavier so it seems to be on the mark.

However if it is using more now than it did previously, on top of what you have done, you could look at your muffler (tap with a hammer to hear if any baffles have freed themselves and restricting gas flow) and your catalytic converter (could be on its way out and restricting flow).
ECU wont be an issue, but plugs should have been checked and changed during the service. If not, whip them out and look at their condition and gap. Still, its a long shot for increased fuel consumption...
Have you changed tyres? I upgraded my 265s to 285s and noticed an increase in fuel usage. No big deal on gas, but enough to hurt the wallet on petrol.
Hope some of this helps!

Just to add to your idea of injector cleaning, dont waste your money on rubbish in a bottle, remove your injectors and have them cleaned, serviced and flow tested. Not cheap, but if yours has done a few kms, an injector service can make a big difference and will most probably improve your fuel consumption and power delivery. It definitely wouldnt hurt thats for sure. Just call around for prices because for whats involved, they all charge like wounded bulls.

Tippa,
Obviously you have gas over diesel.
I don't tow, but am surprised that you could use 35L/100km, and that you have halved costs by adding gas.
Mate I drive a miserable little Rodeo, 3L (TF, I believe, 2001 version.), and gas/chip have transformed the old girl.
But nothing like your savings in economy.
Which system do you use?
Thanks eh.
Jeff H.

Sorry mate.

Ha ha thats ok mate. Frankly i have never seen it use anywhere near 35L/100kms, but the previous owner, my father in law said he saw that all the way across the Simpson towing his camper trailer.
I don't work her as hard, an 8x5 box triler with a tonne in it is all she sees every so often. Towing that around town i think it uses about 25L/100kms of petrol and maybe 27L or so of gas which is less than half the price.

I did however have the gas installer crank up the power (via his laptop as we drove) so it goes possibly better on gas than petrol (well it goes very well and has more than enough torque for my needs) and now she sees around 350kms/80L gas which is around 23L/100kms city driving, so at 70c/L, compared to petrol at $1.55/L it is relative to 10.45L/100kms. It is cheaper to run than a car half it's weight.
So my opinion is that your early 80 series 'cruiser is getting normal fuel consumption figures, and if you want to reduce it's running costs, and can justify the upfront expense (minus govt rebate) then go for gas injection.
Cheers!

Hi Paul,
Just a thought, tyre pressures.
But you've probably checked that.
When was the last time you got normal fuel consumption? and has any thing changed since then. Has it been a gradual worsening?
or was it over night?
Maybe a cracked vacuum hose?

Hmm

thanks for the replies, tyres are 265 all terrains right pressure, slowly got worse,so i guess first stop will be a dyno and check, might be in my early 30,s but lose of lic has slowed me down over the years;))maybe its time for gas?

For a 4.5lt petrol auto that seems about right.

I have a 4.5lt petrol in a troopy manual and I get 5.6ks per litre.

Which is around 18L/100kms. Not bad!
It does come down to driving style too and i fly past other 4WDs in the rush i normally am in, who would be getting better fuel economy than i would be. Except my fuel is half their fuel's price so i can afford to push the skinny pedal a little further ha ha.
