Hi Guys, After trying to find info regarding improving the power on a 3.0 litre V6 petrol Navara D22 and struggling, I thought I'd log my experiences for others reference.
Goal was to improve the power and torque to make towing my 18 foot poptop more relaxed. (I know it would be easier to buy a diesel but couldn't justify the added expense).
After much research we had a 2.5 inch exhaust fitted from the cat back (no headers available) at Genie exhaust centre Myaree (
Perth). Excellent service and very helpful. This made a marked improvement in clean revving of the engine (previously it started to choke around 3200 but after revved freely to 4000+). Sounded more powerful but not a noticeable increase in power.
Next up, we had a UNICHIP fitted at Armadale 4WD Service Centre (
Perth). Excellent service & Micheal really knows his stuff.
The car was put on the dyno before and after and the improvement was 12 KW at the rear
wheels and while that doesn't sound like much, when you are starting at a massive 68 KW then you are looking at 15%.
This has made a dramatic improvement in the driveability of the Navara and I am now using 1 gear higher in almost every scenario. Towing is much improved and can comfortably sit in the 90 to 100 range with the van on (previously a struggle). One added inprovement was the fuel economy which has improved by around 15 to 20% depending on conditions.
At $500 for the exhaust and $1400 for the unichip, I think it is money
well spent.
I hope this helps anyone else contemplating a similiar exercise.
Regards John.

did you put a free flow air cleaner/ filter on it???? if a motor can't breath it won't run to it's full potential. I.e a sports filter???
you did the waste and did the computer, but nothing stating the intake side of things???

No, i didn't change the air filter (it is a standard Nissan element replaced recently). The info I was given was that the greatest improvement was in the exhaust and chip. Next time it goes in I'll have a talk to the mechanic and see what is required if I change the air filter element. It may have to go back on the dyno and have the fuel mapping rechecked if we increase the volume of air coming in. I'll ask the question and see what response I get. Regards John.

i hotted up a daewoo lanos, 175 before puter cut in 4th gear, 185 plus kph down the freeway with racing pod filter, 2" exhaust standard cat that had 2.5" in/output, stock puter, would lay 10 metres of rubber on the ground with 195/50/ 15's lowered
suspension and you would only hear it when you opened it up other then that real quite, was looking at dropping a 2l or 2.3 v6 into it, as i put disc brakes on the rear, only dog box with them!!!
