It could also be something as simple as a dirty fuel or in particular air filter as this can do this as
well. How much is it blowing when you rev it because thats what diesels do to a degree. Always start with the cheapest action take for assessment before you spend the best part of a grand on injectors.

it has a new air cleaner , if it was white i would say rings , but enough black is coming out for me to worry .
fuel consumption varied on last 2000 km outing between 7 to 11ks per km no 2 fills gave me the same reading

What kind of car Kevvie?
There is a diesel place on Churchill Road Kilburn that apparently does changeover injectors at a very reasonable price. Hitech Diesel Injection, telephone 8359 6088, Unit 1/418 Churchill Road Kilburn. No affiliation, never used them, but recommended by a few guys, including one from the trade.
Does your car have a screen type filter in the pump? If so it may be clogged.

Hi Kevin,
Are we talking about your '83 Toyota motorhome, as per your profile? (By the way, the poptop 'caravan' body looks great!)
As mentioned by others, diesels (especially older normally-aspirated designs like I assume yours is) do tend to pump out a good black haze when under heavy load. As long as it's not a thick cloud, I wouldn't worry too much. If the 156,000 kms is genuine, I shouldn't think the injectors would be worn out.
Before spending $$ on injectors, I'd renew all fuel filters, drain and clean the sedimenter if one is fitted (and I'd expect one on a small truck like that). Then put a bottle or two of diesel fuel conditioner/injector cleaner through it over a tank or two of fuel and give it a couple of long highway runs (a few hundred kms).
It's still seems too smoky then have a specialist check the injection timing and test the injectors on a test bench. Ones for that vintage of engine shouldn't be too expensive as they're a lot simplier than modern injectors.
For a bit of background reading on diesels, could I suggest
this article? There are also a couple of other articles on turbos and intercoolers in the Topics/Technical section of this website.
