I am planning a trip thru the Simpson next year but may have an issue with geting leave at the mid year holidays. Is is feasible to travel in the Apr or Sep holidays? Are the roads open at those times?

Cheers,
Tim

Yes and yes. Lots of people have crossed Simpson during these periods. We crossed in April last year. It was hot (35deg) each day and sand was very dry and soft, but it was also very enjoyable. Only negative was fly's. We only passed 5 vehicles too which we also liked. I get the feeling September hotter but could check weather sites about that. good luck

Hi Tim and Di. Of course you can travel at those times. April will be incredibly dry and the weather cooling. Heck it's the desert so who cares if it's dry! September will be getting warmer. The nights won't be as cold but bloody heck, the flies will be terrifying! I'd do April by choice.

As for conditions, everything is really well posted on the various state government roads websites. Should be fairly dry in the April but higher possibilty of rain in the September. The track notes on this website will give you adequate rainfall figures for the months in question.

Cheers

Mick

We travelled the Simpson in October 2004. It was hottish during the day and cool at night.

We got rain one night after bed and it was quite cool the next morning but warm again by lunchtime.

Flys were not a problem, least not one that I remeber.

The sand, even before the wet night, was pretty good. Our biggest issue on the trip was soft lakes and a very wet road between Big Red and Birdsville.

Hi Tim,

We crossed from west to east during early September, 2007.
Plenty of flies at Dalhousie but not so bad further into the Simpson. Warm days and cool nights. We thought it was a nice time to travel in the desert.

I think there were very few flies at Birdsville. (may be we were just lucky)

When ever you go you will enjoy it.

Cheers,

Bob

Yep another September crossing 2nd 1998 and 6mths pregnant. The crossing was great then we headed head first into the Birdsville Races not planed. Was the year of the old mighty dust storm. Went back twice to Birdsville to see what the pub looked like with out the crowds.
