Gday all,

Got an engel eclipse 40l the other day, very impressed. Havent used one much before . Any idea how long the 40l will run(not on freeze, just to keep things like milk cold etc) on a normal 12v car battery? our car has dual batteries but ive never had anything to do with them so just wanna make sure ill be ok over night?

cheers

So long as your battery is OK, it will,be fine overnight. Even when our "House" battery died on trip and we ran the Engel off the starter battery, we could still start the engine next day no problem (diesel Troopy).

It is a great fridge.

Every time you run your fridge on a car battery overnight you are shortening the life of the battery. Car batteries are made to supply a current for a short period (30 sec),to supply 4 amps over a long period you need a deep cycle battery.

Remember that the 40L Engel fridge only draws 4 amps WHEN the compressor is running which in our experience is around 10 mins per hour at night. The overall current draw overnight is not that great and we have found that as our starter battery was and still is in good condition, we did no not harm it.

Overnight, you should use only 8 to 10 Amp Hrs of energy out of the battery which is approx 10% of the capacity of the starter battery in our Troopy. Remember I said in my post, when we were on a trip, we used the starter battery ONLY when the house or 2nd battery died while on that trip. It has since been replaced so it was a short term solution only.

There was a post a couple of months ago on this subject that you may want to look at - only problem with that post was that there was a heap of flaming going on so you will not get any further comments from me on this subject. I have just been telling you my own personal experiences with our 40L Engel Fridge

The later model Engel's only draw about 3-4 Amps with the battery at full charge, this will increase a little as battery voltage drops. With a dual battery set-up you should have no problems at all... Regards Nav.

2.5 Amps is the spec given by Engel on the 40 litre. I measured it with a clamp meter and sure enough: 2.5 Amps
