Hi all, thinking of taking a weekend trip to either Port Smith or Barn Hill. Which did you prefer, where did you catch the most fish mainly. LOL. My server isnt letting me log onto either places websites so cant really decide, can only go off what info i have gathered off locals and they dont really know either. Do both of them have boat hire? I am pretty sure Port Smith does, and it has a creek so will get to do some crabbing and fishing for Jacks and barra. Any advice, will only be rolling a swag so as long as there is some shade im happy. Would prefer a place where i dont have to drive on the sand too much and where its easy to get to the water at high tide.

Cheers

I was at Port Smith in June, it is a lot better than Barn Hill due to it's protection from the wind if it's blowing, you can always fish in the lagoon. The caravan park is great with very clean facilities and is only a couple hundred metres to the boach launching area which has minimal beach driving. Fishing was good, but you have to know where to look!!!!
Hope it helps...

Hi Kroozer, had some friends drop in 2 days ago- they were just up there. Theys said Barn Hill was as windy as all get out which spoiled things for them. I mentioned Port Smith and their comment was that the sand flies were horrendous there. I guess you just have to pack a big can of "Bushmans" in the swag.Oz doc.

More choices for fishing at Port Smith imo. Agree the Sandflies were shocking a month ago, spray a mixture of baby oil & citronella on your skin.

$2 donation to RFDS and the owners take you across in a boat to the point where they leave you for 3 or 4 hours to do what you like, I had a great time just chucking lures on the incoming tide and catch & releasing. Yes P.Smith hire boats.

Fishing off the high cliffs [which arent that high] would also be recommended.

Very high tides so be aware of your tide times to suit your stay.

Ah memories..... last time in Barn Hill was with a bunch of kids from the School of the Air based in Derby. My sister taught there.

I provided a science show for the kids, and my family had a nice camp for a while as we toured Oz. That was 1994.

Just about as far from home as I can get and still be on the mainland.

Another for Port Smith. We were lucky, not one sand fly, but we found the WA sand flies have nothing on sand flies in CQ so may not have noticed them.

Trip over to the island was great also the drives up and down the coast. Northern coast run (4x4 only) was fantastic. Didn't catch anything but fished around people catching large blue tooth.

Damn want to head back now!!
