Hi guys, Having a bit of a bad day trying to wrestle with the laptop and the Magellan GPS. Can anyone remind me how to load the detailed map files from the gps to the computer. I did have it all working but then had to uninstall/reinstall the magellan and mapsend software due to a computer problem. Now I can't seem to load the maps. I have either forgotten how to do it or (more likely) I have a problem with the gps communicating with the computer. I can view detailed maps in the gps on the computer, and can transfer waypoints and data. I can see the detailed map file in the 'my gps' folder but it won't open - error message = the file is not a mapsend file(but it is) or it is corrupt". Any ideas?thanks. oz doc.

Hello
GPS - Magellan eXplorist?
Mapsend - Mapsend Lite V2?
The map program needs to connect to the GPS to get the serial number as the maps will only display when the GPS for which they are made is connected. Sounds like you do have connection sorted out as you say you can transfer data. Suggest you delete the map files in my gps folder on PC and reload them from gps using the map manager function in Mapsend Lite V2. I unfortunately dont have Mapsend Lite loaded any more (use VantagePoint) and have forgotten the exact name of the menu items but its prety straight forward. Also within Mapsend Lite make sure you have GPS type set to explorist (assuming thats what you have - you dont say). If that doesnt work not sure what the issue is.
Cheers
Greg

Hi Explorer- thanks for that. I have only mapsend lite v1- so perhaps I did an upgrade that I forgot about, and when I reinstalled - it went back to v1. Secondly -Whilst I can access the files on the GPS - the mapsend program can't detect the gps! I'm pretty sure I have a cable problem- if I touch the unit when connected it will often lose the connection to computer and several times when connected via the usb port the computer is giving me an error message. My local computer hero came over last night and confirmed the computer is working correctly. He had a very quick look at the gps but the battery was flat and he ran out of time to look at it in detail. Is VantagePoint a better software to use with the Magellan? I should have mentioned it is an explorist 600. Thanks. doc.

Hello - yes your problem is not using V2. V1 didnt allow use of maps from gps I dont think.
Vantagepoint - wouldnt bother - it is a bit hard to learn (not very intuative) and doesnt really do anything that MSLite V2 will do for you (if displaying maps and uploading tracks and waypoints is only functions you need). Has a wider range of export options (using gpsbabel) and also geocaching utilities. Its a free download so
not much to be lost by having a look I suppose.
Cheers

Oz Doc
This may not apply to your problem, but until recently we had connection problems between our Meridian and the laptop with loss of connection for no apparent reason - sometimes just touching the USB cable. I learned that the laptop was recognising the GPS as a track ball mouse. Once I disabled that feature in the control panel, no more connection problems. We use oziexplorer and Natmap/Hema maps on our laptop for navigation on the move so this solution may or may not help you.

Hi John, thanks for that. How did you work out the computer was recognising gps as a trackball mouse? and where in control panel did you go to disable it?Thanks again. doc.

Hello Doc, - The Meridian is an older GPS that connects via a serial cable. To attach to the laptop, I use a USB/Serial connector. Another minor symptom was that occasionally, the cursor would jump around when firing up the laptop with GPS attached. An article on microsoft support suggested that "A serial device may be detected as a serial mouse in 2000/XP". With XP Control Panel, the loaded mouse devices are found in "System - Hardware - Device Manager" & then select "mice & other pointing devices". Once I had disabled the mouse (leaving the touchpad operational) and re booted, the GPS has not faltered - just back from the Anne Beadel and Connie Sue trip and recorded the tracks for the whole trip without missing a beat.
Hope this helps.
John
